The Central Band is the premier and flagship band of The Royal British Legion and strive to be making music at the highest level.

The band has been going for 62 glorious years, and still has a couple of original members! We play what feels like thousands of gigs a year; everything from the finals at Wimbledon in June, through to Buckingham Palace last year. We've also done the Royal Tournament, the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, and more recently played with the RPO at Central Hall, Westminster.

We also do many public concerts too, where you can come and see us even if you're not a member of the royal family or a tennis superstar!

The Central Band is entering a new era under the musical direction of Captain David Cole MVO MMUS ARCM RM. He's shorter than our old DoM, but dances better and is bringing a whole host of new music with him. Feel free to bring your pirate hats to our forthcoming concerts - he's put the Pirates of The Caribbean score into the programme!

    • Hayley Westenra concert - not long to go!

      Hello everyone

      I hope you're all well and not too chilly today!

      You've probably all got a big circle in the calendar already but our concert with Hayley Westenra is rapidly approaching and we're all very excited.

      We've had her program through and she's doing all our favourites, including Hine e Hine, Abide With Me and Pokarekare Ana. We'll also be doing a great selection of film and theatre music, so it should be lots of fun indeed!

      The concert is on March 29th at Fairfield Halls in East Croydon. Tickets can be bought from www.fairfield.co.uk or from their box office on 0208 688 9291. East Croydon has direct trains to and from London Bridge and Victoria, taking only about 15 or so minutes; the venue is also very close to the station

      In the meantime, have a look at Hayley's performance of Hine e Hine - it's just beautiful...

    • Gig in Hastings last weekend

      Ah, how lovely. A day by the seaside in the sunshine. This weekend we hopped on down to Hastings for a lovely gig at their White Rock Theatre. It was great fun, especially as we were playing a relatively new program with lots of fun stuff we don't usually get to do. This concert included everything from Yankee Doodle Dandy to Oliver, with a whole lot of Toccata & Fugue and The Rose thrown in for good measure - a proper evening of sing-a-long fun. Should I feel like a bit of a musical ignoramus for only knowing the Westlife version of The Rose though? Possibly...

      We've got a few weeks off now, the next gig isn't until Fairfield with Hayley Westenra at the end of March. Though the trumpets are doing a gig at Park Lane in a couple of weeks, those trumpet boys being so much more posh than the rest of us!

      Later today I'm going to post a few pix of our weekend away at Newbury, so keep an eye out for those. They're fairly grainy, but squint and you'll think you were looking at an HD TV screen. xx
