À propos de moi

À propos de moi
And, for the benefit of those with flash photography...

I graduated in summer 2006 with an MSci in Physics, and I've just finished up an MSc in High Power RF Science & Engineering, both at the University of Strathclyde. Now, I'm doing a PhD in the physics department, with all kinds of cool researchy stuff for the next 3 or so years. Yep, the dream of being a life-long student is still alive, plus, learning while earning rules.

I've just come into possession of a guitar, so that's keeping me occupied. I'm not in any danger of being the next Johnny Cash, but I'd settle for being able to strum a couple of his songs. Other than that, not much is going on in the life of Dave, aside from playing the occasional round of golf and, more often, video gaming - I need more hobbies. I'd take up drawing, but my artistic ability extends to stick men. My latest hobbieistic endeavour is to try and attain some level of physical fitness.

Claire

World renowned artist, gamer, and fangirl.

Music
Seether, Ash, Feeder, Saliva, Killswitch Engage, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Nickelback, Default, Johnny Cash, Imogen Heap (thanks to Gilmour), Weird Al Yankovich, Metallica, Shinedown, Guns 'N Roses, Disturbed, Alter Bridge, Theory of a Deadman. Mostly rock music, but I dabble in other stuff.
Films
Most sci-fi stuff like Star Wars, Serenity, Starship Troopers. Other stuff including Lucky Number Slevin, Die Hard, the Romero Dead trilogy, Inside Man, Battle Royale, stuff made by Marvel (except Hulk, even Elektra and Fantastic Four were infinitely better than that sorry excuse for a film).
Television Shows
24 (Jack Bauer = God), once again, anything sci-fi related, Star Trek, Firefly, Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis, Lost, Prison Break, Heroes, Smallville, The Simpsons, Futurama, the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica, and Family Guy. Oh, yeah, and a little guilty pleasure of mine: pro-wrestling. Yes, I'm a geek, but whatcha gonna do about it?
Scared Of
Needles, spiders and flying insects, so normal fears. None of this "afraid of crumbs" BS. Shankor scares me sometimes too. And people talking about giving blood. Although, I may actually do so soon, just so I can get over the fear of needles, so I can one day get a tattoo. Maybe. Although the last time I got blood drawn I could barely move for 10 minutes.
Happiest When
Driving, NOT shopping, NOT being ill, watching, listening or NOT running away from anything I've written above, playing video games. Oh, and cooking and then eating Mexican and Chinese food. I'm not fussy. Oh, and hanging out with Claire,
but that's a given.
Heroes
Prof Frink. He makes you laugh and think. And Hiro - because he's awesome. And Jack. Becuase otherwise he might try and assasinate me. And Dr Rodney MacKay - he's my role model.

  • Random Thoughts

    1) Based on a conversation I overheard today:

    Infinity + 1 = Infinity, so, 1 = 0.

So, for any number, n, Infinity + n = Infinity. So all numbers are equal to zero.

    2) If I had a band, I'd call it EMP.

    3) Why does every TV show have to have a whiny character in their main cast?

    4) Opening text files that are 500 Mb in size is not a good idea.

  • Time for an update.

Right, what to say, what to say....

Well, first things first - wireless internet. It's awesome. I'm sitting in a juice bar on Byres Rd, accessing wireless internet, which allows me to write this awesome blog you're currently reading. Yes, awesome.

Well, today marked the final day of my MSc project, with the dreaded viva voce. 15 minutes of presentation on my lifes work - well, at least over the past 3 months - followed by 5 minutes of questions pertaining to said presentation, then another 15 minutes of questions on a 146 page dissertation I handed in last week. Yep, 146 pages, with line and a half spacing, totalling something in the region of 30,000 words. Well, I had a lot to say, and I waffled a little. See, because I'm such a quiet guy in the real world, I feed my talking side on paper - or a keyboard if you're really pedantic - doing stuff like this on the internet, or in reports.

Anyway, viva. Apparently my talk was "nice", or so my supervisor said when I bumped into him on the way back from lunch. If I remember right, I answered all but one question - "Is there a relativistic Lorentz equation?" Wikipedia wasn't forthcoming, so that's a mystery for another day. All I have to do is wait until September the 19th, when our exam board meets. Until then, it's the waiting game.

Other news - my beloved forest green Fiat Punto is no longer my beloved forest green Fiat Punto. In fact, it's no longer mine full stop. Slight problems last Wednesday - after our weekly Star Wars RPG, I'm giving Martin, JB - the male one, not the female one - and Vicky - again, the male one, not the female one, although in this case, I don't know any girls called Vicky - a run home. And what does the car decide to do? Well, wear out it's clutch. Curse you! So, 2 hours, 1 random mechanic, 1 AA dude, 1 sleepy and unwell guy (your's truly) and 1 guy with chattery teeth later, I know the horrible truth, and I limp the 1 mile home to the curb outside my door.

So, I'm left with the soul destorying news that I'll be without a car for a while, once I hear of the £300 bill for a new clutch. Well, thanks to the soon to be TMD bound Mr Gilmour, a hair brained scheme is placed in my head, and then in the minds of my parents, that through various jiggery pokery, and various giving of bits of paper promising people money, Dave gets a new (ish) car, and his parents get a new (completely) car.

So, all seems good on paper. Due to a trip for myself and Claire to London last weekend, I say to my parents something along the lines of "don't rush out and buy a car for the sake of it". Get a phone call on Sunday while sitting in Hyde Park - "yeah, we just bought a Hyundai Amica, getting it on Tuesday, you'll get the gold Punto then". Queue me going "Urrrr?"

So yeah, I now have a 2002 Fiat Punto, complete with 1.2 litre engine and gold paint job, which actually has some serious power behind it, at least when compared with ol' forest green. So, aside from being immenintly poor, I have a car. Go team.

And then there was London. In the height of their summer apparently. 29 degrees is not good. Ever. Especially if you're me who sweats in temperatures about a third of that. It was good I guess. Expensive as hell transport wise - £4 single for a 3 stop ride on the underground? - but other than that I can't complain. Oh wait, I can - there are insanely rude people there. We did only encounter 2 neds though, and they were barely neds. There was the public drinking part, but they were bordering on civilised and actually spoke proper "Queen's" English.

Yeah, I have some photos somewhere. They'll be loaded eventually on Bebo. Hell, I might do it right now.

In the meantime, I will close this particularly long and boring update with good news - I got an unconditional offer last week for a PhD at Strathclyde, studying co-harmonic CRM oscillations. Which basically means I'll be following up the last 3 months work and talk

No, I don't really have any - just that I'm listening to that particular song by Rush at the moment, and I have decided that although my project is giving me a wealth of knowledge on all things plasma-ey and electromagnetism-ey, it is a tool of Satan, and if I were to vanquish said tool, I would actually be able to play video games again.

    Yes, I'm a geek.

If only I could find a way to stop time - much like that kid with the watch in that show that time. I swear the moral of that program was much like the moral of Spider-Man - "With great power, comes great responsibility".

I think I'm just rambling about non-sensical BS now, so I'm away to see how my thousand pages of slightly sensical KARAT plots are doing.

    Thanks man!

Yeah, I'm enjoying myself, but mostly because I've gotten plenty of time to relax and enjoy myself.

Been doing Kali twice a week, hitting the cinema, even going to start bowling once a month down at the quay bowling alley, had a great time when I went there the other day.

How's still student life treating you?
