Greg Inglis (born January 15, 1987 in Kempsey, New South Wales), is an Australian rugby league player for the Melbourne Storm in the National Rugby League competition. Inglis is a rather versatile player meaning that he can play in numerous positions, though he predominantly plays either in the centres or at fullback. Although he started playing as a five-eighth.
Childhood and early career
Inglis began playing rugby league at a very young age for the Bowraville Tigers in NSW. At only 15 years old after being seen playing at a junior carnival on the NSW North Coast he was signed by Iain Mclennan who was associated with the Melbourne Storm. He went to live in Brisbane where he began playing for the Norths Devils in the Queensland Cup. In 2005 he won the 'Courier Mail Best & Fairest Award' after a remarkable season where he scored twenty-four tries in just twelve games, bringing him to the attention of Melbourne's coaching staff.
Melbourne Storm
Inglis burst onto the NRL scene in Melbourne's Round 10, 2005 match against the South Sydney Rabbitohs, scoring a try on debut, further cementing his reputation by scoring two tries (a double) in Round 17 against the Canterbury Bulldogs.
Season 2006 saw Inglis move primarily to the Fullbacks role, where his form saw him in the starting line up in the Queensland State of Origin team. A few early errors were soon forgotten when Inglis scored two tries, and saving one. Unfortunately, this was not enough for Queensland to win the match.
His selection in the Queensland squad caused some controversy, as Inglis was born in New South Wales, but due to the Storm sending him to Brisbane at such a young age, he played his first Senior game or rugby league in Queensland, tying him to the Sunshine State for Representative Football. This proved fortunate for Inglis, as despite his NSW roots, he had always wanted to play for Queensland in State of Origin.
Although Greg was selected for State of Origin II, he was made unavailable the next day after Melbourne Storm medical staff deemed him unfit to play because of a stress fracture in his back.
His freakish playing abilities and ball skills have often been compared to a younger version of Cronulla Sharks/South Sydney Rabbitohs legendary Fullback David Peachey. It has been suggested due to his ball-playing skills he be moved to the postion of Five-eighth
Off the field
Greg was a finalist in the Sexiest Man in League contest for 2006, where he finished fourth with 11% of the vote.
