    • Labour Party candidate, Gearóid Buckley calls for new thinking on local job creation


      Unemployment is a human tragedy





      Labour candidate for the Bandon electoral area and for Bandon Town Council Gearoid Buckley has called for a radical re-think on how local employment can be sustained and new jobs created in the current economic climate.

      Gearoid stated ‘As I canvass the Bandon area again and again people are saying that the issue of job creation is the one issue in which the government has failed the people.’ ‘Equally as President of the Students Union in CIT, I am particularly conscious of the young, educated people leaving our educational institutions with good qualifications and uncertain futures.’



      ‘With more than one in ten people in the labour force on the live register the impact is hitting hard in every town and village in West Cork‘. The ESRI is forecasting that by next year unemployment will reach 17%. This is not just a set of figures for economists to dwell on but a human tragedy that reaches all levels of society and affects all local communities.’



      ‘What is needed are innovative solutions where we can grow jobs in local communities and work to keep small businesses going. I believe that the local authorities such as Cork County Council can play a more active, dynamic role in supporting and growing and sustaining local jobs. We need as a minimum at local government level to:

      Ÿ Support the Labour Party proposal at national level to change the National Development Plan to focus on capital building projects at local level such as replacing school prefabs with properly built schools.

      Ÿ At local government level the Council can implement measures to stimulate local job creation. New businesses should be offered reduced business rates for an initial start up period of at least 2 years.

      Ÿ Cork County Council needs to focus existing agencies such as the County Development Board to target local initiatives aimed at supporting new business ideas.

      Ÿ The Council needs to engage on a more proactive basis with education and training agencies such as UCC, CIT, FAS to identify new job opportunities such as the green economy. The Council also needs to engage more proactively with the VEC and FAS in tandem with the County Development Board to carry out local skills surveys to properly identify local needs for re-training unemployed persons.



      Finally we must end the scandal of the long waiting periods for persons on the live register to receive job seekers allowance. The waiting period in Bandon is a disgrace and additional staffing supports need to be put in place immediately.
