It's a five minute script writing comp and if you win one round then you add another 5 minutes for the next round... I got past the first round last time with just some shit I bashed out over a mince pie and a coffee (ok I lie it was just a coffee) so frankly I don't really give a shit what the rest of it's about anyway... I'll post what I've got so far so if you really feel you're up to it then you can read it and let me know where to go from there. I don't want your criticism because I won't take it into account but feel free to tell me whatever you want.

CHARACTERS

RANGI has been raised in South Auckland. He’s from the lower socio economic and has had a lot to do with gang lifestyle. He’s never left the country and is a little taken aback by foreigners who he has nothing in common with. He falls for Zharon who he thinks is from some Middle Eastern country.

BILL is one of Rangi’s oldest mates. The two have known each other since primary school. He used to be part of the street lifestyle as well before getting his girlfriend (one of many at the time) pregnant. He took the first job he could, based on his experience, to pay the bills. Unfortunately for him though, this was as an executioner. (because in my made up world there is still a death sentence ok).

ZHARON is a very humble and quite quiet person. Mainly because of her inability to speak English properly but also because of her religious beliefs and the way she views people and the world around her. We think she is Middle Eastern but at this time I still haven’t decided where she’s from and therefore I think this should be reflected in her. She is unsure of where she is from but she is sticking to this Middle Eastern thing to feel that she does have some sense of identity.

JEREMAIAH is one of Rangi’s old gang mates. He’s still ruff, rugged and on the streets. He speaks what he thinks and means what he says. In his world, strength determines who the boss is and violence solves all problems.



Two men are in a room. One is sitting on a chair with a hood on waiting to be executed.

Bill (the executioner): So, do you have any final words?

Rangi: ummm yeap…. Shux… the mince pie was mint. Don’t know bout the custard square though, it was ok, but a little hard like it had been left out all day and then frozen and then thawed out again. Actually, it was pretty shit so I’m a bit disappointed but since it’s my last meal I guess I’m happy I never have to eat shit like that again. Other than that, I’m gonna really miss you cuz.

Bill: fuck (takes off executioner’s hood) I can’t do it bro.

Bill steps backward a few steps, the two lock eyes smile and eventually break off into a soft laugh.

Bill: hahaha I was making dinosaurs out of clay, I think mine was a triceratops and I just finished stealing Joey Mansfields raisins from his lunchbox to use as eyes and you walked in the door and///

Rangi: oh here we go…

Bill: yea well I just never thought it would end like this…

Rangi: ha (hangs head sadly but still smiles for his friend) well… it doesn’t matter now anyways cuz… I’m ready… and there’s no one else I’d rather see last, than you.

Bill: I wish I passed NCEA or something like that… went ta uni… I coulda been a lawyer instead and defended you and we could st///

Rangi: haha na bro… things change. People change. That’s just life. This is just your job. You do it to survive. I understand that. You’ve got mouths to feed. Sometimes… Sometimes we have to do the worst things imaginable just to make sure that we can make best things possible, possible for the ones we love.

Bill: since when did you become a philo bro?

Rangi: what the fuck? I didn’t touch no kids!

Bill: no I mean a philo bro…. a philosopher… like jesus or some

i would go myself (as i looove korn) but i have a script writing comp to go to (i'm one of the entrants you see)

all i ask is that you try to convince as many people as you know to come to limelight theatre (part of edge performing arts centre at aotea square) at 9 pm for flip the script and vote for my short play 'the 471'.
