8yrs ago today...my son's life was saved!
8yrs ago last night we got "the call" that there may be a liver & small bowel suitable for my 3yr old son who was critically ill and was going to die without a life saving organ transplant
we flew in a wee ambulance aircraft down to Birmingham Childrens Hospital...scary is an understatement but mixed emotions,would they be a match?...would he survive?...who had lost a child and gifted these precious organs?....did we shut the cat in?...who was gonna look after the cats?...was my youngest son who'd been dumped at a moments notice on his aunt be OK?...was the lightning gonna hit the plane?...
At 11 am this morning 8yrs ago we saw our son lying in intensive care the organ transplant surgery had been a sucess...for the 1st time in years my son's skin was pink...NOT yellow from the jaundice caused by his liver disease!
less than 2 weeks later my 3yr old son ate for the 1st time in his life...a Sunday lunch of roast beef with all the trimmings!
less than a month later we were back in our local hospital in Edinburgh
Now 8yrs on...it's not been an easy road travelled...many a brutal bump en route...but he's here & going to High School this year
Sadly there's a family in North England who lost a little boy about to go to High School that year...a little boy who gave our son LIFE...we are eternally grateful to our son's donor and his family...organ donors are my heroes!
I now have a stream of tears rolling down my face....this is a time of celebration but also commiseration...,joy and sadness.
