- Fantagraphics Books has been a leading proponent of comics as a legitimate form of art and literature since it began publishing the critical trade magazine The Comics Journal in 1976. By the early 1980s, Fantagraphics found itself at the forefront of the burgeoning movement to establish comics as a medium as eloquent and expressive as the more established popular arts of film, literature, poetry, et al. Fantagraphics quickly established a reputation as an advocacy publisher that specialized in seeking out and publishing the kind of innovative work that traditional comics corporations either didn’t know existed or wouldn’t touch: serious, dramatic, historical, journalistic, political, and satirical work by a new generation of alternative cartoonists as well as many artists from the underground comix movement of the '60s. Fantagraphics has since gained an international reputation for its literate and audacious editorial standards and its exacting production values.

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery Presents "Misery Loves Comedy: New
Works by Ivan Brunetti"
May 19 through June 20, 2007, with Artist Reception June 8
Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is pleased to debut the lively
exhibition, "Misery Loves Comedy," featuring new and recent work by
Chicago-based artist Ivan Brunetti. The show opens on Saturday, May
19 and continues through June 20, 2007 at 1201 S. Vale St. in
Seattle's creative Georgetown arts community. The gallery hosts a
festive reception for the artist on Friday, June 8 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
This exhibition commemorates the publication of "Misery Loves Comedy"
by Fantagraphics Books, an anthology of the first three issues of
Brunetti's "Schizo" comic book and other works. Brunetti's self-
deprecating comic stories portray his emotional battles with
depression, divorce and high anxiety, employing compelling dark humor
and visual acuity. His therapist actually provides the book's
introduction. "I'm not going to explain things to readers," Brunetti
comments in a recent edition of Publishers Weekly. "I don't know if I
can explain them to myself."
In addition to Brunetti's new collection, Seattle-based Fantagraphics
Books has published four issues of "Schizo" and two volumes of his
gag cartoons, "Hee!" and "Haw!" Brunetti recently organized "The
Cartoonist's Eye" exhibit at the A+D Gallery of Columbia College
Chicago and edited the companion bestseller "An Anthology of Graphic
Fiction, Cartoons and True Stories," published by Yale University
Press. He has drawn comics and illustrations for The New Yorker, The
New York Times Sunday Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, and Spin, among
many others.
A selection of imagery in a variety of formats is available for
publication. For additional information please contact Larry Reid or
Eric Reynolds at the numbers above.

FANTAGRAPHICS PRESENTS "THE IDIOSYNCRATIC CINEMA OF BRUCE BICKFORD
FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKSTORE PRESENTS "THE IDIOSYNCRATIC CINEMA OF BRUCE
BICKFORD" ON SATURDAY MAY 12
Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is pleased to host a screening of
animated shorts by Seattle-based artist Bruce Bickford on Saturday,
May 12 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. This event, hosted by Bickford's
associate Jim Woodring, gives the public a rare opportunity to view
new and recent works by the highly acclaimed, yet reclusive,
filmmaker. Fantagraphics Bookstore is located at 1201 S. Vale St. at
Airport Way S. in Seattle's Georgetown arts community. The screening
is free to the public of all ages.
Bruce Bickford's obsessive clay and line animations are at once
seductive and grotesque. The son of a Boeing engineer, Bickford began
working in film as an adolescent, drawing on childhood insecurities
and dreams to create a stunning body of work of singular vision. His
work gained international prominence when featured in Frank Zappa's
1979 concert documentary "Baby Snakes." Bickford's contribution
served as a dynamic visualization of Zappa's approach to composition-
as-metamorphosis. Bickford is the subject of the award-winning
feature length 2005 documentary "Monster Road," which will be
available on DVD at the event. He continues to create subversive
films in seclusion in his south Seattle studio.
The program on May 12 will feature four short films, including the
public debut of a recently completed untitled line animation, in
addition to other recent works. Seattle cartoonist Jim Woodring will
serve as host. Woodring's art, currently on view at Fantagraphics
Bookstore, shares Bickford's meticulous and visionary approach to the
creative process. The screening will be followed by comments from
Bickford and a question and answer period with the audience. For
additional information, please contact Larry Reid at the numbers above.

Hi, Frantagraphics! I keep hearing such good things about your comics, but haven't gotten around to reading any just yet... I really want to read Love and Rockets, but it's pretty expensive (they increase the prices hugely over in these parts). Can you recommend some things I might enjoy from your books if I like crime, comedy and romance? Thanks for the request/add!
