- Assassinate the Itch are a Belfast based 4 piece from the South Derry and Cookstown areas. Forming in early 2006 from the remnants of Bryson’s (T&C) regulars Manakin and the lesser known Endorfhin, they quickly got to work on an explosive set of songs that incorporated the influences of post hardcore punk, grunge and emo. They recorded an E.P with Neal Calderwood which was an early but successful indication of the sound they wanted to achieve. Armed with this and an ambition of playing at least some decent venues around Belfast they practiced in bedrooms, kitchens, parish halls and factories. By their third gig in March 2006 they had landed a much coveted slot in one of the best band nights in the North, the Thursday night ‘Radar’ show hosted by the Queens Students Union. After playing a storming set to a packed out ‘Speakeasy’ crowd a reputation was established and a buzz created on the very hierarchically dominated Belfast scene. However, such early exposure was not necessarily a good thing for a band still finding its feet and not as tight as they wanted to be. After good gigs and bad they gradually found a consistency that has seen them play packed headline shows in the Bunker, Belfast and Brysons, Magherafelt. Their live shows have seem the 4 piece writhe across stage in frenzied sets “with enough energy to light up a small city” as described by Eammon P Keyes. They have drawn comparison to the likes of Biffy Clyro and even the Smashing Pumpkins, but have been praised for their unique blend of the mellow and melodic and aggressive ‘blow the place apart’ dynamics.
