The Rugby Football Union and Gloucestershire RFU have teamed up to launch a County School of Rugby for Gloucestershire.

The County School of Rugby, of which there will be one in each county across the country, has been set up by the RFU as the development pathway for all elite players in the region and will be integrated into the RFU Academies.

Gloucestershire RFU has the responsibility for running two schools, fully supported by the Gloucester and Bristol Academies, with the aim to develop the skills of elite players with training sessions delivered by quality coaches.

This is a major step forward by the RFU through the GRFU and the Academies to regularise the identification of potential elite players and to provide a structured quality development pathway.

For 2007/2008 there will be elite groups at Under 14s, Under 15s and Under 16s with an Under U13s age group being introduced in the 2008/2009 season.

For the Under 16s, the first two sessions will be held at Hartpury College. Each session will be two hours. Head Coach for the School of Rugby is Phil Greenaway of Hartpury College and he will be assisted by Mark Nicholson from Marling School and Andy Collins from Monmouth School.

Gloucestershire Schools Rugby squad opened their 2007 Festival campaign on Sunday with a battling display but they were not able to get the better of a well drilled Somerset team whose flair with the ball in hand tore the home team apart for 4 tries in the first half.



Having travelled to Porth Cawl the previous week to play out a tense 0-0 draw with the Boys Clubs of Wales, Gloucestershire were slightly pensive before kick off against a Somerset team full of confidence having beaten Boys Clubs by 50 points two weeks earlier. However, it was the hosts that started the brightest. Fly-half Curtis Russell put a probing kick into the corner and a well executed catch and drive by the forwards saw loose head prop Jake Leonard-Walters ground the ball for a try.



Somerset were soon back in the game with their backs and forwards combining and offloading out of the tackle superbly to stretch the Gloucestershire defence left and right. From a scrum on the Gloucestershire 22, the ball was shipped wide and winger Jackson Szabo had all the space he needed to sprint in at the corner. Fly-half Matt Fotheringham added the touchline conversion to give the visitors the lead.



Somerset were now playing with confidence and Gloucestershire were struggling to contain them as the visitors scored three more tries in quick succession with some flowing moves. Number 8 Gareth Evans crashed over from close range before scrum half George Towers snipped in at the right hand side. Then centre Dan Hanley raced in after a brilliant period of continuity from Somerset. Two more Fotheringham conversions put the visitors in a commanding 26-5 half time lead.



Things looked bleak for Gloucestershire but in the second half the home team regrouped and dominated possession and field position. A succession of penalties saw Gloucestershire kick for the corner and the combination of hooker Ed Swire and lock Jack Allsopp in the lineout set up a series of a
