i was talking to a mate the other day and we decided that to be a 'real' mountain biker you must have to equate to the following;
#1you must ride more than 2 styles, ie dh, trails, dirt jump, freeride park, street, road etc.
#2you must own 2 or more bikes
#3you must ride at least twice a week
#4you must have had a big crash
#5you definatly must be able to change a tube/fix a puncture and change the brake pads on the bikes you own and you must be capable of doing a basic clean/service.
#6you get a bonus point for working in a bike shop, or something bike related.
