The New Zealand Warriors (formerly Auckland Warriors) are a rugby league team based in Auckland, New Zealand who compete in the Australasian based NRL competition.

On the 25th of June the Warriors recorded their largest ever win, defeating South Sydney 66-0 at Telstra Stadium, as part of a four match winning streak that claimed the scalps of the Sydney Roosters, Newcastle Knights, and also the Penrith Panthers. This streak was ended in an extra time loss to the second placed Bulldogs. The Warriors also caused the upset of the season, defeating the Minor Premiers Melbourne 24-20 at Olympic Park Stadium in Melbourne.

  • Steve Price still committed to Warriors

Steve Price says being axed as Warriors captain won't alter his commitment to the club and believes Simon Mannering has the attributes to make a good NRL skipper.

In a shock move yesterday the 23-year-old Mannering was named to replace the 35-year-old Price at the helm of the Warriors for the 2010 season.

Price admits he didn't see this coming but on reflection can understand the move as he gets set to play a season extension on his contract.

An unsuspecting Price was called to coach Ivan Cleary's office last Friday where he was delivered the bad news.

"We were talking about normal stuff and then he said he had decided to go for Simon as captain going forward and gave me the reasons for that," Price told Radio Sport on Thursday.

Price admitted it took a bit of time to sink in after he had been Warriors captain for the last five years following three years in charge of the Canterbury Bulldogs.

"Like anything when you are told something like that you don't really react immediately, I was surprised when he told me and there was a bit of disappointment immediately.

"The next couple of days were a bit tough when you go through things. But I spoke to Ivan about that and I totally understand the reasons behind the decision and really support it."

The Warriors say they are at a junction and having made several changes to the management and coaching structure saw Mannering as the future of the club.

"I think s is a fantastic choice when you look at all the boxes you have to tick," Price said with his usual dose of diplomacy.

"He's committed to the club long term, he's only been a Warrior, he plays 80 minutes every game, he's only missed one game in 100 games and he's a Kiwi. I think it's ideal for Simon to be in that role going forward."

Price promised his demotion wouldn't affect his desire or commitment.

"I didn't just play because I was captain of the Warriors. That was just part of why I played. I loved doing the job - it's not a job it's a privilege. But I haven't got that now, it's a few less worries and I have a bit of time to do some other things. I can just focus on my game and play the best I can.

"I'm really looking forward to it. I'm close to being 100 percent fit. I came back on Monday (to preseason training) raring to go."

He admitted it would be a big change although the club want him to play a mentoring role with Mannering and he's happy to do that.

"It's eight years I've been in that (captaincy) role and I really enjoyed it. I think the extra responsibility has added to my game and I think that's where I got my consistency from.

"I think that's what's going to be great for Simon. It's going to be new territory for him.

"It's been a privilege and honour and yes it's going to be a bit different. But I have to play a similar role. I don't like stepping on people's toes ... that's what we are going to have to work out on and off the field but we will work it out.

"The most important thing is that Simon is the leader and that he is himself and that he is comfortable with himself and doesn't change as a person.

"We are both going to learn and it's going to be different for the team. We just have to allow Simon to be himself. There's no manual to look at that says this is how you do things."

Price felt he had come through the end of season review well after a disappointing campaign by his side.

While injuries decimated his game time this year and Australian representative commitments also affected his Warriors appearances he hadn't been given those as reasons for his demotion.

"You will have to ask the coach that," Price said of his distractions with Queensland, something he was going to try to extend and a role he believed ultimately benefited the Warriors.

"I'm still very passionate about playing Origin and test football and to do that you have to be playing very good football for the club."

  • Mannering to draw on former captains' experience

New Warriors captain Simon Mannering says he will draw on the experience of former skippers Steve Price and Reuben Wiki as he shapes his own leadership style at the NRL club.

Manering was sensationally announced as the first team captain for 2010 today, ending Price's five-year term in charge.

Mannering said he was told of the move last week and while it was a shock he was hugely honoured and excited.

Now it was about getting on with the job.

Short on actual captaincy experience, he noted he wasn't short of examples to follow.

"I can't say I've had too many captains roles but I have played alongside plenty of good captains at Kiwi sides and at the Warriors so I guess the experience I have is from those guys," he said as he fronted a large media gathering.

Mannering suggested his style might be more similar to Wiki than Price.

"Reubs was a great captain for the Warriors and the Kiwis. He was a pretty laidback guy he didn't say a hell of a lot. I'm sort of along the same lines as that so he was a pretty successful captain as well.

"He is around, Dean Bell (new Warriors manager and former captain) is around, Pricey is around. They have all been great captains before. I have a whole lot of good people around me who can help.

"I'll have to find a style. It's just being myself. Ivan (coach Ivan Cleary) said he had put me in this position because of what I have been doing. I'm not the best talker but there are guys in this team that will say something when it needs to be said and so will I."

Mannering said Price, who will continue playing at the club, had pledged his support and he was happy about that.

Mannering who has achieved a lot in quick time, including notching 100 NRL appearances and winning a World Cup said the captaincy was :right up there:" in terms of career highlights.

"It's still sinking in. I will come to terms more with it when we run out on the field but I'm going to make the most of it."

Mannering said with the squad returning to training this week, there was a determination to move on from what had been a disappointing season.

"The only way is up for us, we were pretty much bottom of the table last season. We had a couple of pretty successful years before that so we have to get back to that."

Cleary said Mannering's age of 23 wasn't a problem. He was confident eh would step up and was the captaincy candidate the management had been considering "for a while" to take over from Price.

"He's young in terms of years but he has packed a fair few games in those years. He's young but a very mature young man and he already has a lot of football experience. His age is actually a bonus in terms of longevity," Cleary said.

"He will forge his own style. That will be moulded by his personality and that won't change too much. He's well respected, when he speaks people listen. But he's not a huge talker at this stage, it will be more around the follow me type style."

  • Steve Price stripped of Warriors captaincy

Steve Price has been dropped as Warriors captain with Simon Mannering taking over the skipper's role next year.

Price has a year to run on his contract at the Warriors and the club have seen it as timely to bring in some new blood at the top after the Australian had held the job for the past five seasons.

It's a further sign of sweeping changes at the club following this season's disappointing effort.

A new coaching and management structure has already been put in place.

Second rower Mannering - Napier-born and Nelson-raised - has been a workhorse for the side since debuting in 2005.

He is currently resting from a knee injury that kept him out of the Kiwi's Four Nations tour north.

He made 92 consecutive appearances before the knee injury hit late this season.

Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah said it was important Mannering had every chance to develop as a captain while 2005-2009 captain Price was still with the club.

"Steve has been a fantastic captain for the last five seasons and has done an outstanding job for the Vodafone Warriors in that role both on and off the field," said Scurrah.

"For us, this decision is about the future. Simon has the qualities to be a great captain and the time is right for him to take on that role now.

"We realise that when Steve does eventually retire as a player, a leader of his experience going will leave a huge void and, for that reason, we saw the need to appoint Simon while Steve was still playing for the club."

Although still only 23, Mannering has made rapid progress at both NRL and international level.

He played 19 consecutive tests since his debut in 2006, including the World Cup triumph in Australia last year.

He brought up the 100-game milestone in the NRL in the arriors' final match of the 2009 season against Melbourne.

Mannering said he was humbled when approached to become captain.

"It's such a huge honour to be asked to captain the Vodafone Warriors," he said.

"I'm committed to doing the best I possibly can for the club. I'm very proud to play for the Vodafone Warriors and to now be named to captain the side is an unbelievable privilege.

"I couldn't hope for a better person than Steve to learn from. I have so much respect for him and for what he has done for our club. I intend to learn as much as I can from him."

Warriors head coach Ivan Cleary said Mannering would prove a great choice as captain.

"In all areas his attitude is second to none. Simon also has the utmost respect from everyone at the club and has got the personal qualities required to be an excellent NRL captain," he said.

"Steve has done a terrific job for us as captain over the last five seasons but this is the right time for us to make a change while he is still very much a part of the action. He can be a real strength for Simon and the team.

"We all see Simon being captain of the Vodafone Warriors for years to come."

Mannering becomes the ninth player to be appointed captain since the club's arrival in 1995. After Dean Bell in the inaugural 1995 season, the other official captains have been Greg Alexander (1996), Matthew Ridge (1997-1999), John Simon (2000), co-captains Kevin Campion and Stacey Jones (2001), Monty Betham (2002-2004) and Price (2005-2009).

I couldn't think of anyone better to take over the captaincy. Thought it was strange at first but seen things from their point of view and realise that it would be better to throw him in the deep end whilst he still has Pricey there to support him rather than wait til he retires before appointing a new captain. Mannering would be the obvious choice as he has represented both the Warriors and NZ well in his short career so far. Best of luck to him and the boys and hope they can end the year as good as they start.

so sad, instead of sending Pricey off in style & the respect he deserves as a great Warrior captain, Theyre basically saying 'u aint the man' but i got a feeling Pricey's STILL gonna be the man & he will lead us to finals footy!

That'z exactly what i've been trying 2 say all along! This is what Cleary has 2 be aware of what if Simon doesnt cut up 2 be captain? What if Simon cant handle the captaincy role and the warriors bomb owt the whole 2010 season?? who do we balme then? Cleary or Mannering??

This is why Cleary has think hard and see other optionz and think abowt what he wants 4 da team b4 dropping an experienced captain than bringing a young gun who still in my opinion has a lot 2 learn 2 be a leader 4 da whole team..

This is the latest quote by Steve Price in a newspaper article:

Price said the Warriors could find themselves going backwards if the plan doesn't work."It's a big risk,'' Price said. "Hopefully it proves to be the right decision, but if it doesn't work things could be even worse."

"Where do we go from here if it doesn't work out? I've seen it happen before where a young guy is promoted before he's ready and it shatters their confidence. It's hard to come back from that. But Simon will have plenty of support and that's all we can do.''

theres 2 guys hard done by, Pricey & Luck. Mannering now has to stand up & be the mouthpiece, a role week-in week-out hez not use to. Let's have a massive year boys!
maybe moimoi could be another target, as well as Mateo? after his comment about 'hayney taking all the money' Scurrah get ur chequebook ready!;) :L

When you own a business franchise i.e Macdonalds, you put the best person in charge don't you. While you have the best person in charge, you then train another person in case a situation arises and you need them to take over.

That is what the Warriors should of done. I can see Price and Cleary parting like the red sea. I see their player-coach relationship deteriorating very quickly.

"Steve has done a terrific job for us as captain over the last five seasons but this is the right time for us to make a change while he is still very much a part of the action. He can be a real strength for Simon and the team.

I have extracted that from the left hand side of the fan page on what Cleary has said about Price.

This has just proven my point that Mannering should of been VC after Wiki retired so that he could learn from Price whilst he was the head of the team.

Ivan Cleary boy, you are under the hammer big time. I'm smiling at the moment because I can see Cleary leaving the post mid season.

I reckon you have some merit in your comment Tom. I agree to Hood like me. If Price was going to retire at seasons end, he would of resigned. Instead he has been sacked, which tells me, the Warriors coach is under huuuge pressure to come up big and has made a hasty decision.

I love Mannering, great player, but when you look at the Warriors performances this season, you can nearly say Price was the best of the lot. He is inspirational, is Mannering? Mannering is consistent and very talented, but his potential as a leader needs to be nutured, not thrusted upon.

I would of put Mannering as VC, when Wiki retired. This would of sort out the long term prospect, instead Cleary went with Luck, a veteran and an unlikely captain. This has proved that the coaching staff are under immense pressure and the heat is getting to them.

Mannering may be captain 2010, but you ask the Warriors faithful, they'll tell you who their captain is.

Clearly, you have got this wrong.

what i reckon happened coz its his last year, they prolly wanted Pricey to give up State of O & playing for the Kangaroos coz it takes him away from Warrior duties, but thats the reason he left the Doggies in the 1st place. maybe its in his contract, hu knows but it looks like this is the only thing they could do, demote him as punishment for not stepping down from rep duties. thats pretty sad & makes us just as bad as the aussies asking a player to put club before country. but i guess they both get what they want in the end. No matter what he'll always be a leader on the field & may even enjoy the game more!

i dunno i just think the way Cleary has gone abowt the situation is all wrong... i hope this aint Pricey's last year! He is one of the only few men in NRL 2day dat i respect due to the sportsmanship, love and dedication Pricey has for da NRL game.. Im also hoping that with this major switch in playerz that it dsnt overwhelm the team and have everyone saying in our faces "i told you so" by the warriors having an awful season and by changing captains ddnt make a difference... *sighz* datz just mah thorts on this unexpected off season drama!

As soon as i herd da news this morning the 1st thing that came into my mind was WTF R U SERZ!!! 1st of all wat a great start to the Warriors season 4 2010!! when the warriors are having their 1st training session at the end of 2009, the best player in the NRL 2day by far and most def the best player 4 da warriors gets da news dat he is no longer going to be capatain of a team and sport he loves playing 4!

Im wit u im so fly i have no hate towards Mannering but what is Cleary thinkin that by changing the captain of the waariors team is going to make a difference how a team is going 2 perform next season?? The warriors officials have got it all wrong! They have "sacked" the wrong person and they should've sacked Cleary this year and lets have a new coach 4 2010! Take it Easy same here bro ive herd diff stories dat Pricey was sacked? other sources say he's supportive of Clearys decision and totally backs up Mannering 4 next season, so why all these diff stories 2 begin with??

I've heard/read reports that say Price was stripped/sacked as captain. If that is true, that is absolutely ridiculous. It has been reported that Cleary made the decision, it will be a decision I think that will lead to a decision of Cleary being sacked mid season (Not based on this decision though).

He was captain of the year in 2007, and has been in the top three of props for the past 5 seasons, in which he has gone close to if not should of won the man of the match awards during Origin games.

Why can't Mannering be VC? If the Warriors were going to make this decision, why didn't they annoint Mannering as VC after Wiki left? Price's leadership is not the reason the Warriors struggled this season. Infact, they struggled big time without his leadership. I would of nurtured Mannering into the job, you don't make a good captain overnight which is on Mannering's side, but you don't strip a captaincy of a man who some believe is the best in the business.
