Following up their critically acclaimed 2006 album, “Free Alongside Ship” has proven to be no easy task, but the members of West Hollywood-based avant-pop band Shitting Glitter – now down to a duo – have expatiated upon their ‘angst meets kitsch’ theme to incorporate a broader palette of sounds and styles, all the while retaining their perceived political prowess and sense of social activism.
Take the current single, “Socially Activist,” with its menacing, hypnotic introduction that breaks into a growling guitar and droning drumbeats. The ironic lyrics suggest placing a premium on apathy, in a time when young people are coming of age in a hyper-political world of bloggers, protestors, and talking points.
Experimenting with a new approach, the band has already released four songs from their forthcoming third album, “Open For Business,” as a suite of digital downloads. Two more suites of four songs will be released, with the entire album coming out in 2009.
