You could see the North Island in a week no problem I'd say - you can drive wellington to Auckland in about 8 hours so it just depends how many other thing you want to see. I reckon Wellington, Hawkes Bay, Taupo, Hamilton (bring beer, I'll supply fodd and accommodation), The Coromandel and Auckland. Could do it in 5 days or over a couple of weeks - up to you really.
