To avoid confusion Tim Fleck is a Steve Coogan character - I (Mark) am a statistician living in South Gloucestershire (just slightly more interesting than Tim - only just). If I randomly add you as a friend it's to reply to comments on my alternative and indie music page.

  • MYSPACE PAGES FOR SOME OF MY CURRENT FAVOURITES

I'll try and add to this on a regular basis - please let me know if any of the links don't work.

    MY TOP FIVE

    THOMAS TANTRUM http://www.myspace.com/thomastantrum
One of Marc Riley's favourite bands and hopefully they'll release an album soon. The debut single 'Shake It, Shake It' is terribly infectious and probably my favourite single from last year, but I recommend 'What What What', which reminds me of early Orange Juice.

    VELOFAX http://www.myspace.com/velofax
Jersey's finest (and probably only) post-punk krautrockers. They have released two eponymous albums and I recommend them both. My recommended track is 'Jack's Emporium'.

    FANGS http://www.myspace.com/fangsfangsfangs
Saw these supporting Sons and Daughters and they were amazing (The Queen screams and Marko plays a bass guitar with only 3 strings). I recommend 'Panic Attack', although the session version from Marc Riley's Brain Surgery is much better and more similar to the live version (unfortunately this has disappeared from their page).

    DAVID CRONENBERG'S WIFE http://www.myspace.com/davidcronenbe...
London band who Marc Riley won't get in for a session because they're too creepy. Dark yet amusing lyrics, I'd recommend 'Harry The Morgue' from the songs on their MySpace page. I stand corrected in my orthopaedic shoe - he has given in to pressure and got them in for a session on August 18th.

BITCHEE BITCHEE YA YA YA http://www.myspace.com/bbyayaya
Only heard about this French electro group a couple of weeks ago, having noticed they were due to play a gig in Bristol. They're amazing and should be huge in an ideal world. Great live act that you can't help but dance to. I recommend 'Before' which was their opener when I went to see them and everyone was up dancing.

    OTHER RECOMMENDED PAGES

    ELLE S'APPELLE http://www.myspace.com/ellesappelleband
Recommended: Their debut single 'Little Flame'

    KAROSHI BROTHERS http://www.myspace.com/karoshibros
    Recommended: 'Love the world'

    LUCY AND THE CATERPILLAR
    http://www.myspace.com/lucyandthecat...
    Recommended: 'Alcoholic Dreams'

    STRANGER SON OF WB
    http://www.myspace.com/strangersonofwb
    Recommended: 'Hot Banana Wave'

  • MARC RILEY'S BRAIN SURGERY

Most people will know Marc Riley from The Fall (their best years in my opinion), Marc Riley and The Creepers, or as half of Mark and Lard (and The Shirehorses). Nowadays he's on the great digital station 6 Music.

I found Marc's show on 6 music about 6 months ago and thanks to him my inspiration for music is back (I was clueless after John Peel's death and there were no good shows on Radio 1 anymore - well not before midnight!). Marc is by no means a replacement for John Peel; noone could ever fill those shoes, but he plays some great music old and new. At the moment his show is on Wednesday to Friday, but from the beginning of June he will be moving to Mon-Thu 7-9pm, so that'll mean even more live sessions and Peel sessions.

His show has featured some great live acts including The Wedding Present, The Nightingales, School of Language, Fiery Furnaces, James, The Kills, Sons and Daughters, The Duke Spirit, Thomas Tantrum and Ipso Facto to name just a few. There is also a really good feature called Peel by Request where listeners can email him to request their favourite Peel session; mine was The Tractors from 1987 and he played 3 of the 4 songs back sometime in December.

Add to this a mix of some of the best new music and classic tunes, it really is a great show (it's that good I bought myself a new stereo with a digital radio to listen to the show). Check out his website at the link below to see the type of music he plays and some of the artists who are due to play in the next couple of weeks:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/shows/br...

This is how I find most of my new music these days, but it'd be interesting to know whether other people hear of new music.

Your Roy. You have a very spikey personality and are not very good with the ladies, you are constantly arguing with your best friend moss, yet you always stick by him. You are a good friend and a fun person.

Alright, not spoke to you in a while. How you been?
I've got some Scottish bands you should really check out. Rodent Emporium, a nonsense punk band. They're hilarious but brilliant at the same time. My bebo video is particularly funny. Super Adventure Club are great too, really technical.

I'm working fri and monday mate. I'm in the Fire Brigade and we lost some public holidays in a pay agreement a few years back. The wife and kids have got plenty to keep them busy though!

Hope the weather holds out. We are having great sun with outbursts of monsoons so hopefully you'll be alright for camping down your neck of the woods.

Alright mate. How you been keeping?

Just thought I'd pass on this link:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HCEu...

Not sure if you have it or not, it's only been on youtube for a couple of days. Their 1st official video no less. I'm in it nearly the whole way through but with a big helmet on it might as well have been Lord Lucan. Ah well, fame must wait.

    Keep up the great work.

aha :L i think it's everyones own opinion on music these days. as they're some people that class bands as indie, or rock, it's all about your personal opnion - which is what makes music just interesting.

hm, i'd have to agree there. i've just seen so many people class muse and indie, when i disagree completely. but seeing as your like an indie pro, i decided to ask for your point of view :D aha, razorlight and the kooks, the aparent kings of indie. as if. i like them, but i would never really class them as indie.
