  • League of Ireland U20 Championship - Quarter Final

    UCD 2 - 2 Limerick (AET)
    UCD win 7-6 on penalties
    Saturday 31st October 2009
UCD are firm favorites to win out this tournament, but Limerick FC matched them all the way on Saturday as an exciting game was settled with a penalty shoot out.

UCD started strongly and went ahead after 9 minutes when Sean Heuston headed in from a corner. However, Limerick settled to their task and had opportunities to score before half time, most notably when Cian Doyle found space on the edge of the area to send David Njuki in, but his shot was well saved by the UCD keeper.
Half time: UCD 1 Limerick FC 0

Early in the second half Ward played a dangerous ball across the Limerick FC six yard line and in a desperate attempt to clear Gavin Roche gave away a penalty. Brian Collopy made a terrific save down to his right and lifted the ball over the bar. Shortly after, UCD made it 2-0 with a break down the right, Gavin Fogerty finishing to the net. Limerick brought on Derek Daly and Peter Balogh for Daniel Clinton and Cian Doyle and began to dominate the game with the aid of a strong wind. Ian Storan was just wide of the left upright from a free after Peter Balogh was fouled. Limerick's persistence paid off when Bobby Tier headed in at the back post on 65 minutes. On 75 minutes David McGrath found David Njuki on the right side of the area and he blasted a shot to the roof of the net for 2-2. However, Limerick’s rhythm was broken when the referee took the teams off for 15 minutes as the heavens opened with a thunder shower of hail stones.
Full time: UCD 2 Limerick FC 2

In extra time both teams had opportunity to win it. David Njuki brought a superb full length save from the UCD keeper just before half time. Neither team could break the deadlock and it was down to dreaded penalties. Brian Collopy saved one and got his hand to three others as it took 8 penalties from each team to decide a winner. Limerick penalty scorers were: Dean Finnan, David McGrath, Gavin Roche, Bobby Tier, Peter Balogh and Ian Storan.

Limerick FC: Brian Collopy, Tomas Barrett (Jack Allen), Ian Storan, Gavin Roche, Darren Lynch, Daniel Clinton (Derek Daly), Bobby Tier, Cian Doyle (Peter Balogh), Dean Finnan, David Njuki, David McGrath.
Unused Subs: Michael Sheehan, Cillian O'Connor, Ed Gallagher, Aaron Leahy.

O'Sullivan on board to help Limerick FC

    Tuesday, 23 June 2009 19:22
Limerick FC's efforts to maintain their League of Ireland status received a boost this week with news that Co Limerick businessman Pat O'Sullivan has made a 'significant and generous' contribution to the club's funds.

In a statement issued by the club today, the management committee and board said that O'Sullivan 'stepped up to provide substantial financial support' while chairman, Jack McCarthy, said that 'several individuals and businesses donated €250/€500 to the club' and many people signed up to 'Leo's Lotto' to bolster the club's finances.

At a public meeting in the Strand Hotel on Sunday night, club PRO Joe Sweeney revealed that it needed €70,000 'within a week' and appealed to ordinary supporters and business people to 'ensure the future of Limerick FC'.

A club statement said that at the positive meeting it 'demonstrated how far it has come in 18 months under the stewardship of Jack McCarthy and showed its plans for the future, but stressed the importance of further funding to reach their goal of self sufficiency and their return to the Premier Division.'

Sweeney revealed: 'Pat is a local successful business man with a genuine interest in soccer and he has the future of Limerick FC at heart. He brings us considerable business acumen and is a very welcome addition to the Limerick FC board.'

McCarthy also expressed his appreciation to O'Sullivan, saying that 'the team is fortunate to have a man of his calibre and standing join us'.

Originally from Ballylanders, O'Sullivan has two businesses - Galtee Fuels and Green Heat - and has an interest in all sports.

'Soccer being the most played sport in the city, county and indeed the entire mid-west can help to keep young people out of mischief and help them become the best they can be,' he said.

McCarthy praised the management committee for its 'unwavering dedication' and added that 'despite the challenges I have grown to love this club, and I am thrilled that local investors are getting behind us'.

    Team News

Pat Scully has strengthened his squad further with the signing of Cillian O'Connor from Athea United.

The League of Ireland is on a break this week, so the senior players are enjoying a well earned holiday. They return to training on Sunday.

The next match is away to Monaghan United on Thursday 2 July. Although a long mid-week trip, if anyone is interested in travelling to this game they should contact the Supporters Club (085-7408289), who will run a bus if enough fans wish to travel.

Meanwhile, Limerick FC U20s play Mervue United in Galway this Saturday in a pre-season friendly. The U20 League campaign begins in the first week of July.

Congratulations to Mark O'Riordan, winner of the Leo's Lottery draw for May.
Thank you to all those who have signed up to Leo's Lottery since our public meeting on Sunday. With enough people on board, your commitment of €21 per month can go a long way to help the Club realise its plans for development.
For more information on Leo's Lottery and the other ways you can help the Club, see www.limerickfc.ie/fundraising

The management committee of Limerick FC would like to thank all those who attended our public meeting on Sunday. The support shown gives us great hope. With your help we should be able to see the Club through this difficult period.
