  • Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant - MOVIE REVIEW

Hey, it's Cassie here. Since the film came out two days ago I have been dying to view it and now I have! Since I normally don't contribute to this group too much (and I apologise for that, I just don't go on Bebo that often anymore) and nobody has done it thus far, I figured it'd be a good idea for me to write a review on the subject, because I am sure a few of those who have seen the film are in ecstacy whilst many of you are in fits of rage.

    Disclaimers and SPOILER Warnings:
Just to clarify, I do not own Darren Shan, nor do I own any rights to his movie.
In addition, just so that none of you complain: there are major movie spoilers in this review, naturally, and if you haven't seen it yet and want to be surprised I don't think you should read this because the film differs from the books a hell of a lot.
On the other hand, if you have not yet seen the film and aren't sure whether you want to then perhaps you should check this review out-- because it may sway your opinions either towards seeing the movie or vice versa.
And obviously, if you've already seen it and simply want to compare your reasoning with my own then go ahead-- that's why I am writing this.

Well, firstly, I thought the start was fairly faithful to the books, to be totally honest with you. I have not read The Saga Of Darren Shan in a long time so correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the way they obtained the tickets in the movie was wrong, as well as a few minor things; C.Limbs is female (rather than male, as he is in the books... Or at least as far as I know), The Vampaneze don't have purple skin and Gertha Teeth kissed Darren in a montage, for example. It wasn't tiny mistakes like these that bothered me, it was the fact that some of the key points of the story were altered for what seemed like no apparent reason: Steve was bitten at school(which, by the way makes no sense: Larten said that if people around Madam Octa got scared then she would bite. He also said this in the books. That's why, in 'Cirque Du Freak', when Annie walks in on Steve and Darren with Madam Octa, she screams and the spider bites Steve. But in the film, a whole bunch of students screamed and flailed when they saw Octa, but she only attacked Steve...?), Debbie was non-existent and a new character called "Rebecca" seemed to take her place in Darren's heart - and she's a MONKEY(?!), Larten Crepsley is apparently dating Truska and other mistakes like this were made throughout the film. I am not complaining, but it seems to me like these alterations were added for no reason at all. They didn't really contribute much to the film, and it made me wonder: what, exactly, is the point in changing something about an already successful story if it does not contribute to the plot-line at all and could possibly change the ending so much that it has a totally different concept? I mean, I would understand them taking Debbie out of the movie if they thought it would do any good, or if they thought she was unimportant and the rest of the movies would be unaffected. However, now that they have removed her from the actual plot, she will have to be removed from the future films. This is actually kind of worrying because she plays a major role in the later story-- and she also a huge factor in Darren's character development.
On top of this, Crepsley dating Truska also bewilders me: in the books, L.Crepsley seemed to be a rather isolated, serious character. In the movie he's harsh, but he's not as quiet and as... How to put it? He just does not bring the same 'presence', so to speak. But-- dating TRUSKA? This is just as confusing as the disappearance of Debbie Hemlock! Whatever will happen to Arra Sails? What will happen to her role in the future media releases of this saga, or will she end up forgotten, just like Debbie? Who knows, eh? The motivation of the director is already confusing and they've only released one film thus far!
I suppose what I am trying to sa

  • CIRQUE DU FREAK: THE VAMPIRE'S ASSISTANT

    Hey guys!

    The film is out, finally!

For more information visit the bebo page:
    http://www.bebo.com/vampiresassistant

    Or even Demon Freak's page:

So, I've added a poll for you guys to rate the film.
Comment in this blog what you think about the film.
You could use the comments section on the actual page, but wouldn't it be mean to ruin all the spoilers and changes in the film for those who haven't seen it?

    I agree with Vicki.

All the things in the movie worked, they were loveable characters.
And yeah maybe their road is different, but it basically tells the same story.
Of course the books are better; nothing can beat them in my eyes, but you know, they did a good job, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Darren Shan did say to try and look at it from a different perspective aswell, so I did. And it helped a lot. (:

I've just seen the film, too.

I really enjoyed it, despite all the changes that have been made.
Some of the changes, were big, yes. Some were unnecessary, but they worked.

I see the film as this: well loved characters on a slightly different road to life.
    A different Destiny.
After all, aren't the books about destiny in the first place?

Oh, and I was impressed a LOT with Mr Tiny, Mr Crepsley and Steve!
    Well cast indeed.
Darren... Annoyed me a little bit.
