    • The sky seems lit with roses today...

      I consider myself a very lucky girl. I have my Teddy at last. He is mine to keep. I feel as though I am floating on a lily pond, warm water lapping at me and beautiful scents all around me. He proposed to me in the garden, as we were walking in the rose gardens. He said it very matter-of-fact, just as I imagined he would. I have loved him such a long time. He said to me: "Miss Darlington... Lucie... Do you know what I think?"
      "No, I'm afraid I do not," I replied.
      "I think we should be married. Do not you agree?"
      "I... Are you in earnest?"
      "Why, of course, Lucie. I love you, you must know that."

      As soon as he uttered those words, I said yes. I would have said yes, in spite of any answer he gave. I have simply been fortunate, and for that I am thankful. Teddy, to me, is the very best kind of person. He is strong and he is selfless, but he is also practical and logical. He has a mind of fierce intelligence, whereas I do not, and I know it to be so. He will care for me, and more than that, he will love me and he will give me a life outside of this one and we will make it beautiful. I do not wish to imply that I have ever been dissatisfied with my existance here, I am merely saying that I have so long loved Teddy and since he began to court me, the dreams I entertained about a life for Teddy and me are now able to become a reality.

      The notice was in the paper. When mama read it to me yesterday, I couldn't help the shiver of excitement inside me. Soon... though not soon enough, I shall be Mrs. Theodore Spencer.

      In truth, I have not spoken two words to Lucy ("Lucie") since she informed me of her betrothal. Why should I? What reason have I to converse with someone who has affianced herself to the man I had one day hoped to marry?

      This was in the Times today:

      "Mr Theodore Spencer, of Greenley Park, Devonshire is to be married to Miss Lucy Darlington, of Darlington House, Northumberland. Mr. Spencer is the only son of the late Mr. William Theodore Spencer. Miss Lucy Darlington younger daughter of Sir Albert Darlington. The family of each respective party are currently both resding in London."

      I greatly wish I had not seen it.

      My single consolation is this; Greenley Park is in Devonshire, which means she shall be living on the opposite side of the country to me. A fact which gives me great satisfaction. I have no desire to see her further.

      Our friends the Davies' came to offer their congratulations. For this I loath them. Only Sarah Davies has the presence of mind to consider that this occasion may cause me pain. I was obliged to take tea with mamma, Lucy, Teddy (I must henceforth call him Mr. Spencer), Mrs Davies, Miss Davies, and Miss Beth Davies. There was much joyous celebrating and complimenting of the "happy couple". Mrs Davies was, unfortunately, most effusive. I could hardy countennance it. I quit the room as soon as I was able and rushed to the library where I stole papa's newspaper. It was from yesterday, as papa has not yet dieposed with todays one. It was in this paper that I read the announcement. Truly, it is official now and I am at a loss as to what to do entirely. I have not removed myself from the library, and have no wish to do so until otherwise requested. It seems to be to be the only safe haven in this house.
