DOGHOUSE GIG REVIEW
SCOTLAND LIVE - BANDS TO WATCH!!
GHOSTS OF PROGRESS - The Doghouse, Dundee 20-12-09
If the songs this band played moved in next to you, they'd be up all night having riotous drunken parties. You'd be calling the authorities every night to have an asbo put on them. They'd kick down your door to borrow a cup of sugar - then they'd throw up on your floor before you had a chance. They'd be the loudest neighbours you could imagine and they'd keep you up all night with the TV volume set on stun.
Welcome to the world of Ghosts of Progress!!
This band is a duo - they play electric guitars - and the singer operates a couple of drums and cymbal with his foot. He has a voice that you could hear over a working shipyard and carries the songs with a distinctive sense of aggression, passion and raw power. To a mix of the curious and the faithful who were in attendance at The Doghouse tonight, they whipped up this amazing maelstrom of guitars as a set of hi-octane stompers were unleashed one by one on a half unsuspecting Doghouse with the fury of a million angry wasps. The rhythms prove irresistible as the songs dropped as bombs from the skies, having the effect of nuclear warheads on the absolutely mesmerised audience, who were either transfixed and rooted to the spot, swaying unswervingly from side to side or dancing like dervishes at the front.
On several songs, the singer-guitarist switches to playing electric slide guitar but this is no ordinary slide guitar sound as he lets this torrent of searing slide guitar erupt from the PA as the other guy's tearing off riffs and rhythms with the effect of a napalm gun, all the time, the thunder of infectious drums and cymbals defying you not to move to the hurricane they unleash. The effect is spine-tingling as you let yourself drown in the most awesome sound you've heard a band discharge for many a long while.
As their song title describes, this band do truly have the "keys to the kingdom", a musical kingdom that is uniquely theirs and one that they rule with a swagger, a confidence and power that is impossible to ignore and enjoyable every time you hear it, simply leaving you wanting more. Ignore them at your peril!!
