The Spungos are the punk band I’m in. The band consists of four members, Chris Guilfoyle (Lead guitar and backing vocals), Patrick Murphy (Rhythm guitar and lead vocals), Conor Lumsden (Bass and backing vocals) and Sally Stapleton (Drums). We play regular gigs in the city and in the Dun Laoghaire area and we have also started playing gigs in Kilcoole, Co. Wicklow. We are also planning to release a CD pretty soon, the CD is called “Lung Butter’’ it has 8 songs on it in total and we plan to sell it at around €2 or nearest offer.

We have played the Marian College concern benefit gigs 2 years in a row. We like to play charity gigs, we have done gigs for The Irish Wheelchair Association, we did a gig to help raise money for a girl to get an operation on her brain and we did a gig to help build a church in Uganda.

The Spungos have been going since 2002 and it will be this April when we celebrate the bands 2-year anniversary. We have never expected to do what we do today and we didn’t expect the recognition we have got over the past two years.

We practice once a week at our drummer’s house, at the moment we are working on new songs. Every time we write a new song our style has changed. When we first started off our music resembled something along the lines of Blink 182 and Good Charlotte. But then we changed dramatically last year, our music became more aggressive. One of the first songs that defined our change was the song “Kill Norman”.

Musically the song was different and it was lyrically different also. Our songs used to be about girls but this song was about politics, this song is directed towards Norman Askew who is the owner of the Sellafield nuclear power plant. Our singer Patrick did a lot of research on Sellafield and found out that it is grossly un-safe due to negligence and greed.

The band swung in a new direction again. Songs such as “Privileged”, “ Wide Eyed” and “ Part of me” have a very aggressive tone but the songs still keep their melody. This is why I really enjoy playing in The Spungos, we keep changing, making our songs more challenging and creating new styles.

The Spungos is something that I’m proud of. We may not be liked by everyone but who cares? There are some types of music I don’t like so it is their decision. But I feel that if you have never heard of us you should try going to see us play you never know you might even like us. I hope The Spungos will last for a long time and hopefully we will never stop creating new music for people to enjoy.
