Óige Ghlas
Me, Myself, and I
The Young Greens were founded in 2002 with the aim of bringing together ecologically minded young people from around Ireland, and representing their views nationally.

While being a political organisation, we are aware of the fact that large sections of the population have become estranged from the political process, and that politics on its own may not be sufficient to deal with the problems of the modern world. Similarly, as an environmental organisation we see postive, intelligent engagement with the structures of society as the best way of achieving our aims.

  • Trinity College focuses on food

The Green Party's Food Minister Trevor Sargent TD today launched Trinity College Dublin's first ever food week accompanied by life-sized fruit and vegetables to promote healthy eating among students. The awareness week, organized by Trinity Young Greens and the university's Food and Drink Society, aims to get students thinking about healthy eating, food supply and security and climate change.

Young Greens Campaigns Co-ordinator Barra Roantree said: "Recent weeks have seen food rise up the agenda in the national and international media as food commodities surge in price and the global market experiences real shortages for the first time in the memory of most college students. Combined with the need to tackle climate change, we must look at new ways of producing and consuming food. We must try to move towards locally produced organic food that is fresh and seasonal."

A special menu devised in conjunction with Darina Allen will feature in campus restaurants throughout the week, while an organic mini-market opens in the front square of the college on Wednesday and Thursday. "This will allow students access to good quality healthy food enabling students to make the healthy choice," said Mr Roantree. "Free recipes and food information will be distributed throughout the week."

Minister of State for Food and Horticulture Trevor Sargent will address students on Tuesday evening to discuss the issue of GMOs. Speaking at today's launch Minister Sargent said: "Raising awareness of food issues, from sourcing local food and ensuring global food security to protecting farmers and consumers against risks associated with GMOs, are a vital part of the Green agenda. This event comes at a time when food has never been a more central issue and when the global challenges are more acute that ever before. I wholeheartedly welcome this campaign and I would like to commend the Young Greens and the Food and Drink Society for their good work in this regard. I look forward to similar events being organised throughout the country."

Throughout the week there will be film screenings in the Buttery cafe highlighting exploitation in the area of coffee production. Trinity's Jewish society will hold a Passover food tasting on Friday and Dublin University Food and Drink Society will oversee Free Apple Friday to encourage students to include more fruit in their daily diets.

  • Green Party COnvention 2008

Hi this is the national mailing list of the Young Greens / Óige Ghlas
    of Ireland.
We have organised subsidised accommodation for the Convention and will
also be organising entertainment and possibly food for the weekend
also. As always the Convention will be free to attend with the
opportunity to join the party for a year at the cost of €5 for the
    unwaged.

The convention is open to attend by all Young Greens (if you're on
this mailing list you may consider yourself a young green) and anybody
who wishes to join the green party also.

We're giving you plenty of Notice as it is on the weekend of April
    11th to 13th 2008 in Dundalk Co. Louth ( http://tinyurl.com/yugy2l )

If you are thinking of attending your best bet is just to respond to
this email (chair@younggreens.ie) and we'll add you to a sub mailing list of people who are
interested/available to attend. and then remove you, should you ask.

the convention brochure is available from the green party website
    http://www.greenparty.ie/en/conventi...

All questions welcomed and will be answered quickly

why is it important to respond to this email?
    to secure accommodation
to book places for the leader's speech (which are extremely limited)
to book places for the workshops
to organise travel with other people (carpool / bus maybe)
to get to know other young greens
and most of all to have a good time.

If you're interested in any of the above please respond sooner rather
    than later.

there is more than 200 people on this mailing list and 600 on the bebo never mind branch members .and the convention will only hold about 350-400 people so please get back to us to avoid disappointment.

Thank you for your answer. I much appreciate it. However saying that NEC is too busy is quite flawed. Dont ye have someone in charge of communications in the NEC whose task is to...ehh communicate to the public?

With respect with what you say about "being the most democratic party in Ireland" and with 66% majority, I cant argue against that. However whats the point of being the most democratic party in Ireland when you can`t reach an important decision towards something like the Lisbon Treaty.

I know there would be far left liberals in the minority who would want to keep the 66% rule as it would give them some leverage especially to that bully Mc Kenna.

In my opinion saying either "yay" nor "nay" showed the party to be divided and produced a negative image onto the party.

    Re. Donncha's comments.

Your page is set to private so we can't reply to you on your page.
However, as you cared enough to ask a question we will reply here this time. We, the YOUNG GREENS, are completely independent of the Green Party when it comes to policy making. We cannot answer policy questions on behalf of the Green Party. If you want an answer from the Green Party, you must contact the Green Party. http://www.greenparty.ie/about/imprint

As with Donnacha below, no-one bothered to answer my question and that was 9 weeks ago?

What has happened to NEC? Gone for a walk in the woods and never came back?

You should at least have the manners to write back to people who are concern on where the party is going. It just makes people think that ye dont care.

SDLP YOUTH: DEMONSTRATION AGAINST COMMENTS BY IRIS ROBINSON MP

It is clear that Iris Robinson believes it is acceptable for her to preach outrageous messages of hate and discrimination based on her interpretation of ancient biblical texts. However, the vast majority of people in Northern Ireland do not agree with her comments.

PLEASE JOIN US ON THURSDAY 31st JULY at 1pm OUTSIDE BELFAST CITY HALL WHERE WE WILL HOLD A DEMONSTRATION. Everyone is invited, including family and friends of gay and lesbian people.

Iam pretty far from Ireland so i wouldnt be exposed to the irish news really. Please enlightening me.

Why are the Greens taking no stance on the Lisbon treaty. I would normally look to the party for their view on such political issues. However for this referendum they are the only party not to take a stance on the issue and so I wonder if this is a reflection on the pressure go along with Fianna Fail in order to support the govt. I always viewd the Greens as the only truely independently thinking party in the Dail. Has this changed now that the greens are finally in a position of power.
