Ever wonder how the Subaru motor vehicle got its name, what it means, or what the star emblem represents?
Subaru, a Japanese car company, is the automotive division of Fuji Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (FHI).
Unlike some other motor companies, such as Ford (founded by Henry), Suzuki (founded by Michio), Toyota (founded by Sakichi Toyoda), and Honda (founded by Soichiro Honda), Subaru is not named after its founder.
"Subaru" is the Japanese word for the star cluster Pleiades that is depicted in the company logo. The Pleiades (also known as the Seven Sisters) has only six stars easily visible to the naked eye. Subaru's logo of six stars represents the five companies that came together after World War II to form one large company.
Before WWII, the maker of SUBARU cars, Fuji Heavy industries (FHI), was known as Nakajima Aircraft, which made many fighters and bombers. Even the famous Mitsubishi Zero fighter had a Nakajima 14 cylinder engine. After the war, the company was forced to spread into 15 companies to cut the strength of the huge weapon industry. In the early 1950s, five of the original companies gathered into one again to restart as a transportation company. That was FHI and that's why there are five little stars and one big star.
So, the present SUBARU emblem represents the present company structure rather than the original star cluster image.
While smaller than many of its competitors, Subaru has been a highly profitable company for many years. It is noted for the production of conventional-bodied cars with full-time AWD (in fact, in many markets its entire product range has this feature) and its use of boxer engines

The types of all wheel drive system`s used by subaru
Continuous AWD: Subaru manual transmissions use Continuous AWD, normally 50/50 front-to-back power split and use a mechanical viscous center differential to to vary the power split when there is a loss of traction.
Active AWD: Subaru's automatic transmission use Active AWD, mostly front wheel drive and uses traction sensing computer input to electronically vary the front to rear power split via a hydraulic multi-plate transfer clutch.
VTD AWD (variable torque distribution). New in 2001, VTD transfers powers front to back electronically. The power split is 45/55 front/rear and the rear wheel bias is designed for a more luxury car feel as opposed to the front bias of the Active AWD system. Usually 45/55 front to back split but that varies according to wheel slippage.
Limited Slip Rear Axle: Limited Slip transfers power to rear wheel with best traction. Also known as Posi-traction.0 comentarios 973 días

The VDC system
VDC system is the top of the line system used on certain models and is also the name of an Outback Limited model. New is 2001. VDC is Vehicle Dynamics Control
VDC is composed of 2 main systems: VTD plus VDC full time 4 wheel traction and engine management.
VDC is traction control that senses vehicle direction and uses brake, throttle and engine management to help maintain stability.
The components of the VDC system are:
all wheel drive using the VTD system (see above).
When the wheels are spinning without traction or the vehicle is not going in the direction it is being steered, the VDC system kicks in.
Direction: uses brakes to slow down wheels to reduce spin and help control vehicle direction.
Skidding: yaw and steering wheel sensors use brakes to slow down spinning wheels and re-direct power to the wheel(s) with the best traction to re-gain control.
Engine power use engine output to slow spinning by reducing spark to cylinders to cut back power and help re-gain control.

Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC)
The VDC uses Subaru's new horizontally opposed, 212-horsepower, six-cylinder engine. It's got nearly 50 more horsepower than the basic four-cylinder Outback engine. We found it to be very powerful in this car, without being ridiculously powerful -- although it's not far off. You step on the gas lightly, and this car GOES. Just bought myself one of the last old shape scoobys. 07 plate with ppp pumpin out 320 bhp. Cant believe what they have done with the new model. Not a fan at all !!! Got myself one of the last real scoobys while I could !!!
