  • Hunter Burgan

Hunter Burgan (born May 14, 1976) is the third and current bassist of AFI. He played in a band called The Force at the time that he joined AFI. He was meant to be a temporary replacement for the existing bassist, for a few tours and a record, Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes, but eventually became AFI's full-time bassist in November 1997. The Force broke up in September 1998.

Burgan loves Prince's music and even has his own side-project called Hunter Revenge dedicated to singing early-Prince-style R&B. He is the person playing piano in AFI's "The Chicken Song". Burgan can play drums, bass, guitar, saxophone and piano. He was the drummer and one of the founding members of The Frisk, who played their final show in December, 2005. He has also played drums for The Eyeliners and the Halo Friendlies on tour.

Burgan is a vegan, as is AFI's singer, Davey Havok. Burgan is often considered the most friendly, approachable member of AFI, and sometimes interacts candidly with fans on his personal website.

Burgan plays Fender American Jazz Basses and Ampeg Amps.[1]

He also has a side project entitled "Hunter Revenge", which released an eight song self titled album in 2001 via his own label, Checkmate Records. He says he has "a ton of new material recorded and ready to go, but everything is on pause until AFI takes a break. I wouldn't want anything I do outside to interfere or take precedence."[citation needed]

  • Davey Havok

Shortly after he was born, he moved to Ukiah, California, where Havok attended Catholic school in Ukiah through eighth grade. During high school, his friends Markus Stopholese and Vic Chalker wanted to start a band, though the trio had no musical training. Stopholese learned guitar and Chalker learned bass.

Shortly after high school, the band broke up and Havok moved to Berkeley, California, where he attended the University of California, Berkeley, planning to double major in English and Psychology. He began constantly writing lyrics to songs that would eventually appear on AFI's Answer That and Stay Fashionable and Very Proud of Ya.The band reunited at Phoenix Theatre in a gig put together by one of their classmates. They decided to reunite and record an album.

Answer That and Stay Fashionable (1995) was released on Wingnut Records. Geoff Kresge left during a tour for Very Proud of Ya and was replaced by Hunter Burgan. On the band's third full-length, Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes, Havok's lyrics began to include themes of religion, humanity and other more serious issues.

Afterwards, Stopholese was asked to leave the band. His replacement was Jade Puget, the band's old friend from high school who said he would join after he graduated college. AFI then released their first full length release with Hunter and Jade, Black Sails In The Sunset. In fall of that year, they released the All Hallows EP. In 2000, they released The Art of Drowning to fair record sales, but great acclaim by fans of the band. In 2000, Havok was invited to write lyrics and record vocals for the album, "Songs From The Earth" by Son of Sam. The band recorded one album, which features members of Samhain, Danzig, and Tiger Army, among others. AFI then toured for a few years releasing a few EPs along the way. In 2003, the band's first major label release, Sing the Sorrow , came out, gaining great record sales. The band's seventh album Decemberunderground was released in 2006.

In 2005, Havok was a part of a short-lived fashion line, Glitterboy Clothing, a collaboration with designers of the Serious clothing line. It was partly inspired by th '70s glam music scene. The line was canceled due to creative differences between Havok and Serious. However, on a side note, Havok has said that he is planning another clothing line for the future, dubbed Glitterotica, but it will be done through a different company. According to Havok, the new line of clothing will be out in 2007.

  • Jade Puget

Jade Errol Puget (born November 26, 1973) is the current guitarist for the band AFI. He joined the band in 1998. Before joining AFI, Jade played in various bands, most significantly Loose Change with Chon Travis (which shared a 7" with AFI in 1992 when the bands first started. This 7", titled Dork, was AFI's first vinyl), and Redemption 87. Puget also played with Green Day for a very short time while they were only a local phenomenon.

Jade's recordings with the band include the EPs Black Sails (1999), All Hallows (1999), The Days of the Phoenix (2001), and 336 (2002) and the full length CDs Black Sails in the Sunset (1999), The Art of Drowning (2000), Sing the Sorrow (2003) and Decemberunderground (2006).

Jade's influence as a musician contributed to AFI's change over the years, as is evident from the differences between Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes (1997, pre-Jade) and Black Sails in the Sunset (1999, post-Jade).

Jade shares the Straight Edge lifestyle with Davey Havok, AFI's singer. However, the band itself is not Straight Edge.

Jade has a sister, a half brother named Gibson, and a younger brother named Smith who is AFI's tour manager. Gibson appears in the poem between the end of "...but home is nowhere" and the beginning of This Time Imperfect on Sing the Sorrow.

Jade dropped out of high school at the age of seventeen but still got into UC Berkeley. Jade joined the band after completing college (the rest of the band had quit college in order to continue with the band). He has a bachelor's degree in social theory.

Jade has several tattoos, including an "18" on his arm (which was originally a "13"), a cat jumping through a 9 (a tattoo he shares with Nick 13 of Tiger Army and Davey) and the word "Committed" arched across his stomach. On his arms, he has the words "Boys Don't Cry" (a homage to The Cure) and the words "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (a Joy Division tribute). He sports a bleached "mullet hawk" haircut, as well as some tiny sideburns lovingly dubbed 'Jadeburns' by the fan community.

Jade plays Gibson Les Paul Studio Guitars through Mesa Boogie Dual-Rectifier heads and Marshall cabs. However, he has been known to play a Gibson SG on occasion.
