  • Laos Weeks 9-10

Alright Geebags, sorry its been so long since i've updated my blog but the pure madness that is Thailand is to blame for the delay! Where was i??........ Oh Yeah Laos.

We were supposed to get a bus from Siem Reap to Vientien in Laos but we discovered that it would take us between 2 & 3 days to get there of which most would be spent on a bus.......hum no chance im doing that cus the last bus i got was only 12 hours and my ass was numb for days after! So we decided to fly, it was great cus i was sleep for take off and the lads had to wake me when we landed, you just dont get better than that!

So we arrived in Vientien and straight away went looking for a place to stay. We got something eventually after trying about 6 places cus everywhere was full. So i was thinking this place was going to be jammers with back packers given our difficulty trying to find accommodation, happy days i was thinking. Well, typically i couldn't have been more wrong. Vientien is a ghost town, easily the quietest capital i've ever been to. Seriously you could play curbs and you would have to stop for a car all day it was a joke! Not that we actually played curbs, just tip the can!! But we were the only people knocking about and everything closed at 10.30 it was a nightmare. I think the highlight of our time in Vientien was taking the piss out of Scully because the lad has the worst directional sense ever. We were at a crossroad with our hostel straight ahead. So we asked Scully to show us the way home..."i'd go left, the take the right and go right again" he told us. Alright Scully you do that the rest of us will just go straight, our hostels just here" He's ridiculous, but its mad the way you notice things about people when you spend alot of time with them, i think thats why Scully worked in Swords cus he'd never find his way home from town!

Not surprisingly we left Vientien the next day, and made our way north to Vang Vien. Just as i was beginning to wonder why there was all this hype about Laos being the coolest place in the world we pulled into this seemingly sleepy village that just looked like the best place i'd ever seen. The village consisted of one main street with no more than 3 or 4 side streets, you could walk around the place in 15 minutes. There were guest houses, restaurants, bars and little shops everywhere and most importantly there was hundreds of back packers about. To make things even better our bus pulled right into this cool guest house which we basically took over for the week we'd stay here. This was the first time all of us lads set eyes on the Scandinavians!! Seriously some of them are so hot you just know you'd be wasting your time trying to chat them up, no chance, even Murphy excepted defeat!

One funny thing i noticed was that in many of the restaurants they had a special menu which consisted of weed, opium and magic mushrooms. You can order these by the portion or bag, to consume in or to go, not quite Cambodia but still fecking mad. The ironic thing is that if your caught smoking weed on the river while tubing you get fined $500, we met a few people who managed to reduce their fine to $200, Laos, its a strange place!

Tubing is the best thing i've ever done, im actually gutted just writing about it i miss it that much. When we were on the river i kept thinking to my self how cool it would be if we had the weather to do this at home cus it wasnt even that hot, bit chilly at night, it kind of reminded me of home in a way. Anyway, you get these tubes and a beir lao of course and effortlessly float down the river. You have all these swing bars where you can stop of and mess about on the massive swings the locals have built, they look dodgy but they're as safe as houses, some of the swings are fecking huge, just climbing up to them can give you the willies!! When you leave one swing bar you get another beer lao and the aim is to have it finished before the next swing, which in far to many cases was just

  • Cambodia Week 8-9

Cambodia, Jesus where do i start...... Well first of all anything goes in Cambodia, its basically a lawless country where you'll be offered every narcotic countless times a day. You can blow a cow up with a bazooka if your fucked up in head enough to actually want to do something like that! So on that note i'll start my Cambodian experience.

I arrived in Phnom Phen a day after the lads and when i met them at our guest house they were all flaked out consuming happy shakes, pizza's and there were at least 3 joints doing the rounds, alright lads i said, i got a few half mumbles for a reply so i said to myself unless i get into the same state as these lads i'll be talking to myself all night! Checked the wallet, not a penny so i went straight to the ATM on the back of a bike, only problem was that this jippo driving the bike was either hammered or had never driven a bike before, i mean he was all over the place and when we stopped i had to plant my feet on the ground to make sure we dont keel over, he was a lunatic! Eventually and thankfully in one piece i got to the bank. So i go through the usual ritual of putting the card in, English, yep, pin code ****, yeah done that and finally i hit the $200 button. The screen goes to the part where it says your transaction is in progress. So i wait and wait for ages but theres no money coming out of this poxy machine. Next thing the guard sticks his head into the room and says "machine broken, ATM over there" and he points across the street. So immediately i start thinking to myself there something dodgy here, again he tells me the ATM is broken and to go to the other one. I decide im not leaving while my transaction is apparently in progress so i hit the cancel button a couple of times and my $200 pops out, i turn to the dodgy cunt of a guard and give him an absolute filthy look by which he replies with this cheeky smile the fucker. Just one of the many scams you'll get in a corrupt county like Cambodia. Anyway back to the guest house i go.

I decide to get an extra happy pizza to myself because im a stupid fucker. The lads were sharing a happy pizza between 3, yet i got a whole one to my self with an added bit of happiness. This turned out to be the worst night of my life, I ended up alone in my room with out the ability to move or communicate with anyone, I was hallucinating and hearing shit. Basically i freaked out and thought i was going insane, i got so paranoid that i thought if i fell asleep i wouldn't wake up, seriously it was the worst i've ever felt, and the ironic thing is they call this shit happy, fuck that it was anything but happy, but the truth be told i just over indulged, lesson learnt the hard way as usual!

The next day i was feeling better but still completely stoned, i wasn't freaking out anymore but i wasn't quite myself shall we say! We went to the Killing fields and a place called S21 where the Kermer Rouge used to interrogate and torture Cambodians before sending to the fields where they were killed and buried in mass graves. It was horrific. S21 was an old school and it just had the ieery feeling about it. We went into some of the cells where people were held, you could see marks on the wall and there was blood stains in some places. It was so surreal and to think this only happened 30 years ago is frightening. At the Killing Fields there's still bones lying on the ground, Its messed up. There's this memorial casing filled with hundreds of sculls, its as high as a 4 story building, completely filled with sculls, you just dont expect to see anything like that.

We finished the day off by shooting AK47's and Shot guns. The kick back off them is unbelievable, when your firing the AK47 you just think to your self what a pain in the ass it'd be to get shot by this feckin thing and when your firing the Shotgun you think, who'd actually survive being hit by this yoke!, they're lethal. We were then offered the opportunity to blow up a cow with a bazooka

  • Week 7 Last Week in Vietnam

Saigon is more of a party town than Nha Trang, in fact its not even a contest. We were out till all hours on Wednesday night which was great cus we'd a 7 o'clock start the next morning, its like Myrtle Beach with no lie in, but at least were all in the same boat!!

The Cu Chi Tunnels were unbelievable, we crawled through a small section which at times i was asking myself weather it was a good idea or not, it was fecking tight down there and you couldn't see your hand in front of your face it was so dark, so of course you start telling yourself that you've gone to far and you'll get stuck, our guide was in bits laughing at us. You should have seen the look on our faces when our guide told us that the tunnel we crawled through had been widened for westerners, Leo's like a giant compared to the Vietnamese!! A whole village lived under ground during the war, mad bastards, seriously imagine one day everyone in lusk decided to move underground and live there for a few years, thats actually a great idea now that i think of it!! Needless to say we all had power nap when we got back, i was wrecked & slept till about 9. We headed out again, this was a seven in the morning job, great fun cus we all had breakfast hammered and you know how messy that gets!

Friday was the best day ever, we went to the water park in Saigon and to our surprise we had the whole place to our selves, no queues or any of that crap, we were like 7 kids in a sweet shop. We must have gone on every slide about 6 or 7 times, it was a great laugh. They had this cable running about 10 feet over the water and you grab onto this handle and fly down the cable. Your supposed to let go before the handle reaches this stopper but if you hold on till the end the thing stops dead and you get catapulted through the air, everyone had at least one good belly flop, what a laugh!!

The Friday night was our last big night out in Vietnam, we had a brilliant night, we met a guy from England called Jason, Stue the kiwi guy who flipped my tuk tuk turned up and there were a few more but basically we'd a group of about 12 knocking around, we had a laugh everyone was in top form.

The next morning the lads went to Phnom Phen, i decided to stay an extra day in Saigon with Jamie, we went and played a football match against a local Vietnamese side. It was a proper set up, lines men and all but im not joking when i say i couldn't move after the first 5 minutes i was so wrecked. Their not the most talented bunch i've ever seen but by fuck can they run, Forrest Gump wouldn't have a look in, i was embarrassed cus i was so unfit....eh i mean it was too hot for me!! Went out that night and watched United beat Liverpool, didn't really deserve it but i wasn't complaining, i was in this quite Indian restaurant having dinner when dopey head O'Shea scored and of course i jumped up and screamed as if Ireland had just won the world cup, i got the strangest looks off everyone in the place, got out of there straight after.

On the Sunday i got the bus to Phnom Phen in Cambodia. I was sad to leave cus Vietnam was one of the coolest if not the coolest country ive even been to, it was absolutely amazing and anyone who's undecided on weather to go there or not, believe me its a must.

While travelling through Vietnam i saw some pretty cool things but i'll just mention the range of stuff i saw being transported on the back of a moped, you wont believe me!

A whole entire family of six people, cows, pigs, massive tractor tires, about 5 huge bags of rice, concrete slabs, a load of bricks, other mopeds, about 10 dogs in cages, mattresses, furniture the list goes on, we couldn't believe our eyes at times. And to top it all off, one day we saw two mopeds side by side carrying a tree, not a bush, a fully grown tree like you'd see in a park or somewhere, we all just cracked up laughing cus they we moving at about 3 miles an hour, i hope they weren't going to replant the thing somewhere cus it

It turned out that the sweet-talking, tattoo-sporting pikey was a gypsy bare-knuckle boxing champion. Which makes him harder than a coffin nail. Right now, that's the last thing on Tommy's mind. If Gorgeous doesn't wake up in the next few minutes, Tommy knows he'll be buried with him. Why would the gypsies go through the trouble of explaining why a man died in their campsite when they can bury the pair of them and just move camp? It's not like they got social security numbers, is it? Tommy - the TIT - is praying. And if he isn't, he fucking should be.....

Ah day time tv. Step into my office my friend. Was a month on it before i came out here. I was always a fan of flicking between skyone and paramount in the mornings. Then you got skysports news from 1 to 2 cause thats when they do the real news. after that its just on a loop. From 2 theres normally something watchable on e4 or one of those channels then its back to paramount till 5. Then its time for deal or no deal. Sometimes you get some shit movie on but i wouldn't hold your breath. Another option is when i was there Xtra Vision were doing series box sets. They kept me entertained for a couple of days. Lastly most of the good tv is on a night so i would recommend staying up and then sleeping late. It shortens the day. Ah dear i really did enjoy my month back in Skerries!!!
