PCOS - Polycystic ovarian syndrome.

For those who don't know I have PCOS. One of the online groups I'm with is encouraging people to make their stories public or start a journal cause its not something that is often talked about, so here I am, doing my good deed for the day by starting my online journal thing.

Oh, if you don't like hearing about hormones, reproduction or periods then piss off and grow up.

PCOS is caused by an increase of insulin in the body and the body not knowing what to do with it and because of that the ovaries produce androgen (male hormone) and cysts begin to grow in the ovaries. Depending on how severe it is you could have some of the following symptoms:
•infrequent menstrual periods, no menstrual periods, and/or irregular bleeding
•infertility (not able to get pregnant) because of not ovulating
•increased hair growth on the face, chest, stomach, back, thumbs, or toes—a condition called hirsutism (HER-suh-tiz-um)
•ovarian cysts
•acne, oily skin, or dandruff
•weight gain or obesity, usually carrying extra weight around the waist
•insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes
•high cholesterol
•high blood pressure
•male-pattern baldness or thinning hair
•patches of thickened and dark brown or black skin on the neck, arms, breasts, or thighs
•skin tags, or tiny excess flaps of skin in the armpits or neck area
•pelvic pain
•anxiety or depression due to appearance and/or infertility
•sleep apnea—excessive snoring and times when breathing stops while asleep
•chronic mood swings

I suffer from no peiods, infertility, increased hair growth, ovarian cysts, weight gain/obesity, insulin resistance (verging on type 2 diabetes), patches of thickened/darkened skin (for those who've ever seen the dark marks around my neck, no its not cause I haven't washed or because Doug strangles me lol), skin tags, anxiety/depression, sleep apnea (poor Doug lol) and mood swings (this is where everyone goes, oh thats why she's such a bitch).

PCOS is associated with longer term health risks, including diabetes (especially those with a family history), raised blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, sub fertility and cancer of the womb.

I was diagnosed at 17.

My doctor does regular blood tests etc to keep an eye on my insulin levels. I went back to her today to get a smear test done (check for cancer etc), results will be back in two weeks. She spoke to me about what I want to do with having kids as I need to have them fairly early. I have to have another blood test tomorrow 31/07/09, so I have to fast overnight (boooooo!!!!!). She is starting me back on Metformin (which is used for people with diabetes to help control their insulin levels) which is a horrible drug that causes stomach cramps and diarreoah for the first few weeks (clearly I am not a fan). She is making an appointment with the dietician for me to see and with the Endocrinologist at the hospital, who will hopefully be able to cap the amount of male hormones being released into my body.

Next appointment, 13/08/09. And so my battle to get pregnant begins.....

1. He does not have a 'beer gut'... he has developed a 'liquid grain storage facility.'


2. He is not a 'bad dancer' - he is ‘overly caucasian.'



3. He does not 'get lost all the time' – he ‘investigates alternative destinations.'


4. He is not 'balding' - he is in 'follicle regression.'



5. He does not act like a 'total a** ' - he develops a case of ‘rectal-cranial inversion.'


6. It's not his 'crack' you see hanging out of his pants - it's 'rear cleavage.
