À propos de moi

À propos de moi
When Nas debuted in 1994, he was quickly labeled the new Rakim. But he was a new kind of beast — try Rakim, Slick Rick, Kool G Rap and KRS-One wrapped into one MC. He was grungy and unrefined, but prolific. Although Wu-Tang Clan, Buckshot from Black Moon, Snoop and Tha Dogg Pound were spitting at the time, upon Nasir's arrival, it was clear that he was special. Unquestionably, Nas' gift has remained intact more than a decade later. He may get criticized for his beat selection, but if you just sit back and listen to his words, there's no disputing Queens' favorite son was, and still is, as ill as they come.

Co-Signer: Slick Rick
"I think Nas is a great MC because he's like a Tupac in a way: He doesn't waste a lot of time bragging. He comes with emotions, he speaks on positivity for the growth of kids and women. He pretty much tells his life in a humble way. I think that's a great thing that shows the variety rap has. When he came out, he made a hellafied impact. It's his God-given talent that stands out in the crowd. I thought he was an excellently skillful rapper. It was only a few skillful rappers: Kane, Rakim ... he was up there with them. He had raw talent. He was a child when he came out; now he's a married man. He's showing the streets can grow. He has the ability of giving you a vivid look in a new-generation way with that rugged rap skill. There aren't too many rappers who can compete with him."

100 Percent Proof
"…Live on the run, police paying me to give in my gun./ Trick my Wisdom, with the system that imprisoned my son./ Smoke a gold leaf I hold heat, nonchalantly./ I'm raunchy, but things I do is real it never haunts me./ While, funny style ni--as roll in the pile./ Booster heads profile on a bus to Riker's Isle./ Holdin weed inside they pu--y with they minds on the pretty things in life, props is a true thug's wife."

— from "Verbal Intercourse" (from Raekwon The Chef's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, 1995)

  • nas's night in dublin

    Nas
Live at the Point Theatre, Dublin

    Date: 24/3/2005

It has been an eventful couple of months in the life of Nasir Jones. Marriage to a certain Milkshake loving R&B star, a duet with his father, and the release of his phenomenal double album "Street Disciple". Tonight Nas plays his debut Irish concert in Dublin's point theatre.

After watching a mediocre performance from Irish Hip hop outfit, Urban Intelligence, it seems like we have been waiting for an eternity and the atmosphere is becoming anxious as "we want Nas" echo's through the crowd.

Suddenly, MC Elliott, 2 large bodyguards and Nas himself, take to the dark and empty stage. Things kick off immediately with performances of new track including "Message to the feds", "Street Disciple" and "Suicide Bounce". It is instantly clear that the audience, mostly made of young males, like the new material. The chorus of each track is being chanted with enthusiasm through out the venue. At times even Nas himself seems surprised at the warmth with which he is received.

The set list continues with Nas dipping into his extensive back catalogue as he dusts off old classics including " Street Dreams", " If I ruled the world" and " Get Urself a…" . These are obvious crowd pleasers, while " Life's a Bitch" and " World is Yours" are appreciated by the hard core fans .DJ Elliot then interjects with an interlude of current and classic hip-hop hits giving Mr Jones a well-deserved breather.

A kind of sober hush falls over the room as Nas, who is holding an Irish flag, dedicates the poignant " Can I have a moment" to "anyone who has lost someone" and suddenly the glow of lighters and mobile phone cameras shines here and there among the fans

The proceedings soon heat up again with energetic deliveries of " Hate me Now" and "Book of Rhymes "among others. Of course no Nas gig could go without his now infamous "dis record", "Takeover" which is aimed squarely at Jay Z creating an almost giddy buzz.

The funk inspired "Get Down" and blues influenced new hit, "Bridging the Gap" are well received with lots of hands in the air and heads nodding in appreciation. The theatre lights gradually dim to pitch black, with a single spotlight illuminating the figure of the New York rapper. He drops to his knees and gives a utterly truthful rendition of his hit " One Mic".

The night comes to a close and wraps up nicely with an explosive finale of " Made you look" giving punters exactly what they want. It seems certain that Irish fans will welcome back the Queen Bridge boy with open arms on his next tour.
