À propos de moi

À propos de moi
Candace E. Salima was born right smack dab in the middle of twelve children. In a family comprised of his, mine and ours, Candace can barely remember a time when reading wasn't an integral part of her life. Her love of books, reading and writing, was born of hearing her mother read nightly from the James Herriot series about a veterinarian's mishaps in the British countryside. She thrived in a family of readers, began writing original stories at the age of eleven and has never looked back.

The daughter of a father who survived the invasion of Hitler's war machine in his homeland and a mother who is an often controversial conservative columnist, Candace spent her childhood on the back of a horse or trudging through the mountains and valleys of the American west. Now she is the author of Out of Shadows . . . Into the Light, Forged in the Refiners Fire and 13 and 0: Reflections of Champions.

  • From Dream a little dream . . . Darkest Before the Dawn

On the morning of September 11, 2001, the United States of America was attacked on her own soil. We weren't attacked by another country, but by a faction of fanatics who have decided they must rid the world of Christians, democracy, free enterprises and hope. They did not attack military installations but rather, chose to ravage civilian targets. I don't bring this up to delve in the politics of war, but to speak of what happened in America thereafter.

We were a nation in shock. So many innocents, from so many countries, lost their lives that day. And so many more paid ultimate prices later when their health was affected by the toxic air. So many first responders lost their lives or became terminally ill. Children were without fathers and mothers. Fathers and mothers lost their sons and daughters. Heroes were born that day, and heroes died that day. And our nation wept.

Americans flocked, enmasse, to churches across the nation. They mourned, they wept and they plead with a God they hadn't spoken to in decades for surcease from the pain. For three to six months, America's churches were full and then people forgot and began to find better things to do on Sunday again.

Seven years later, we still face war torn disaster after natural disaster wracking the world. People across the globe have opened their hearts and their wallets, even traveling to devastated nations in order to help a people whose worlds have been turned upside down. However, we have become disaster weary, giving nowhere nearly as much as we have in the past to the countries of Myanmar and China. Why is that?

Well, as far as Myanmar is concerned, the Myanmar military is taking every supply being sent to that ravaged nation and using it for themselves. The death tolls amongst her citizens rises daily. And it is difficult to donate to a country's military when her people are dying. So that one, I actually understand.

As to China, a communist regime, who allows her citizens to have only one children. Hundreds of thousands of them lost that "one" child to this recent earthquake. My heart literally aches for the mothers and fathers who no longer have that one bright hope left in their lives. Their families are at an end. Yet another nation devastated by natural disaster. And yes, this Sunday I'm adding a little extra to Humanitarian, Fast Offering and Welfare when I pay my tithing. At least I know that needed supplies are definitely making their way to these devastated people.

Here in our nation we have faced earthquakes, fires, hurricanes and tornadoes and the American people continue to give of their money and their time in order to help their fellow citizens in need. It is an admirable quality of the American people who gave $295 billion in charitable donations last year, 4% of which went overseas, according to Glenn Beck.

But when it comes right down to it: When the rain has stopped, the waters have dropped, the ground has stopped shaking and the wind has passed on . . . what do you, as an individual, have left. Indeed, times of tragedy always bring us back to our Lord Jesus Christ. Almost all people turn to Him when their lives are out of control.

But looking at the world today, I see people who have stayed on that path to Jesus Christ. And yes, they deal with travesty, tragedy, sorrow, illness, disease and pain, but their inner core remains strong and hopeful. Why is that? Because when clinging to the Iron Rod, which is the word of God, there is a hope instilled in your heart and spirit that can only be killed by you. If Jesus Christ is real to you, there is a Light that cannot be extinguished.

So truly, it may be darkest before the dawn, but remember: Those who remain in Christ will also have a core strength which will carry them through the darkest nights. If it takes a day and a night kneeling in prayer to draw on that strength, then that is what we must do. If it takes turning off the television or computer and falling to our knees a

  • Alvin's Kidney Transplant in April 15th

On April 15th, at 9:30 in the morning, Alvin will be checking into the Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah for a kidney transplant. He will be in the hospital for 5 to 7 days, on the tenth floor. Any of you who would like to be here, please let me know and I'll do what I can to find accommodations for you.

As many of you may or may not know, it is a beautiful woman who was a Laurel when I was the Young Women President who is giving Alvin her kidney. Her generosity and gift of life is tremendous and Alvin and I pray daily that the windows of heaven have opened and blessings and protections poured out upon her and her sweet family. Tara's husband Billy returns from Baghdad at the end of May. She wants, and indeed needs, to be completely healed by then and so it is necessary this surgery take place this month. That is why April 15th was chosen.

Alvin and I have been working out, and are very grateful to Gold's Gym for making things work for us so that Alvin could work out when he was feeling good, no matter what time of the day or night. Because of this we've been getting in a minimum of 4 workouts a week. Sometimes we can go for 45 minutes to an hour, sometimes just 20 or 30 minutes. It truly depends what Alvin has had to do the day before. He's cut out the pop and sweets and is eating very healthy now, within the limits of his kidney dictated diet. He has continued to lose weight and I am so proud of him. But because of time constraints he has not been able to lose everything he needed to. (He's lost 20 pounds in the last four weeks, but now they want another 30 gone before the surgery.)

We are very excited about the upcoming transplant, and it is indeed the prayers offered by many of you which have brought this about. When Alvin and I spoke to our social worker (Mark) and the transplant team we were assured everything was covered by Alvin's insurance and Medicare. We learned we would not have to pay a dime for the transplant. Which is really good, because the $250,000 price put me into sticker shock that took a couple of days to come out of. Since that time, some added expenses have shown, most of which we've been able to take care of--thank heavens.

This is probably the most difficult email I will ever write. When the new kidney is put in Alvin it will be placed right behind the abdominal wall. Any excess weight on the stomach can cause damage to the new kidney, which is why Alvin and I have been working so hard to get that last 50 pounds off him. As many of you know, he was at 425 when we began working out. He is now at 290. I am so incredibly proud of him! He's worked so hard to get himself in the position where he could get the transplant.

He still has 50 pounds to go, he's lost weight from everywhere and all that's left is the trunk of his body, which has also reduced in size, drastically. But not enough. The transplant team is insisting that they perform a tummy tuck to remove the remaining weight before they implant the new kidney. They will be doing both at the same time. Or rather, tummy tuck and then they will immediately put the new kidney in before they close up. This part is not covered by the insurance, although we have tried. They have reduced the cost to $2,500, which, as I understand it, is a screaming deal. Had we had a little more time we could have worked things out so that we would have these funds. But we do not have the time.

As I said, this is the most difficult thing I have ever had to ask. I have set up a Paypal Account specifically for this effort to raise the rest of the funds. Some of you have been very generous already and Alvin and I are eternally in your debt. I know times are tight right now and so if donating anything is beyond your means at this time, please know that we are still grateful for the great love you have for Alvin and the prayers you offer on his behalf. But if you are able to donate $5, $10, $15, $25 or more, we will be grateful for every dollar.

    Yo

Alvin is back to work now. Boy, we had trouble keeping him in the house when he was supposed to be chilling. He's so funny. Although he's been so sick, he's abnormally strong so he just keeps plugging along.

Glad things are going well there. We miss you guys.

    Hi Penny!

I didn't know you were home. Get my cell number from your father and give me a call. You, your mom and I have got to go get some breakfast and get a pedicure or something!

Uncle is doing great! The kidney transplant was a success and it is working incredibly well. He's struggling to heal from the other surgery they insisted he have at the same time. But he's up and around and doing great! We'll drop by the Samoan ward soon. Once he's passed the severe anti-rejection phase. (August for that one.)

We love you and are so proud of you college girl!
