Tout sur moi
i am a proud ambassador of the geek; i don't care what you say, geeks are great and are walking comedy gold!
i watch a lot of films and like to talk about them. maybe a little too much.

i've just recently celebrated my 4 year anniversary of moving to the big smoke and i'm working as a design engineering consultant, check ME out!
i live with pete the football nutter who has successfully brainwashed me into being obsessed with the real-life soap opera that is football.
Music
Radiohead, Muse, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Nine black alps, Feeder, Green Day, Nirvana, Jimmy eat World but also a bit of kylie, ABBA and sugababes go down a treat.

g right, saying 'dude', being immature, swearing, playing sonic the hedgehog 2, making spreadsheets for calculations, Solidworks, an empty laundry basket, walking whilst listening to my ipod, being geeky, remembering where i'd seen that actor before, cooking a steak that tastes great, rolf harris, derren brown, jeremy clarkson, that wee welsh commentator for the rugby, the expression on people's faces when i tell them i'm an engineer
i hate
being late, nutters on the road, parallel parking, realising uni was a waste of time, Pro-Engineer Wildfire, long boring 0-0 football matches with extra time, ironing, unexpected computer crashes when you haven't saved in a while, the theme tune for casualty, recurring zombie nightmares, politicians, when people think they're better than me for no good reason
telly i watch
eastenders, hollyoaks, my name is earl, scrubs, the f word, desperate housewives, peep show, family guy
telly i hate

right, eh, what have i been watching.....

the dark knight - 'the comic book film i had been waiting for someone to make' says our pete. its very good and heath ledger deserves the hype he received (although i don't believe he would ever win an oscar for it). the action is good, the story is dark and difficult, the baddies crazy and unrelenting but the running time is long and this was a bone of contention for me as i was fidgeting and looking at my watch 2hrs into it.

wall-e - despite enjoying the movie and believing that wall-e was utterly adorable, i felt this to be very preachy for children covering topics such as environmentalism, human consumerism and capitalism.

vantage point - a simple film trying to be more clever than it is by trying a inarritu editing technique. however, this film did not carry the drama or story effectively enough to be a good comparison to similar films. nice bourne-esque car chase sequence and a good twist though.

before the devil knows you're dead - this film had potential; about an hour in to the film i did not know where it was leading next. the ending was utterly ruined by embarking on a crazy tangent in storyline which only got more ridiculous as the film reached its climax.. bit of a waste.

drillbit taylor - take some underdog geek high school juniors, add a typically loveable loser owen wilson to get some cheap laughs and a predictable ending. done.

forgetting sarah marshall - did not feel at all original but russel brand was surprisingly funny. about 20minutes too long.

hallam foe - nice little indie. hallam is a 17year old loner oddball who lives with his minted dad and new girlfriend. convinced that said girlfriend has helped murder his mother, vocalising his theories causes him to have to leave home. in edinburgh he follows a woman with a strong resemblance for his mother and basically ensures that he is involved in her life.
some weird moments, nice performances and good laughs. a nice little film.

rescue dawn - story of a captured soldier's bid for freedom whilst in vietnam. ok.

brick lane - story of a muslim woman in london trying to return to bangladesh after being married off as a young teen. not interesting/exciting in the end but provided characters and plot direction so that you believed it would be.

i'm not there - story of bob dylan's life divided into several 'characters'. not being a bob dylan fan i did not appreciate this at all. it was trying to be too clever and meshed memories, reports and fantasies to be completely garbled to a person who did not know anything about him.

no country for old men - 95% excellent chase story with great action and tense moments 5% tommy lee jones talking nonsense about horses.

there will be blood - not a particularly interesting story but an excellent character piece with an oscar deserved performance from mr day-lewis. what i didn't get is reviews described this as depicting the change in a person due to the corruption by greed but i saw the greed and corruption from the beginning. the main change was in the last 10minutes when he turned on the main people he loved as drink, not greed, had warped him in the end.

lions for lambs - excellent tale of the iraq conflict told from 3 different perspectives. stellar cast with some very anti-iraq commentary.

hancock - good and very funny up to a certain point in the story which takes the film in a different direction that isn't so good or funny.

jumper - fairly bland actioner with potential for a fairly decent franchise. its no heroes though.

charlie wilson's war - good story about americans pursuing funding to allow iraquis to
drive off those pesky ruskies. interesting true story with a thought provoking karma ending.

juno - this is just simply fantastic. really funny, great cast (oscar nod thoroughly deserved), great characters with a heartwarming fuzzy ending.
i want to own this and watch it over and over. WATCH IT!

lust, caution - 'isn't that really rude' says a co-worker of mine 'yes, yes it is' i replied. its the tale of a chinese resistance group trying to infiltrate a traitor collaborating with the japanese. basically its black book set in china, except black book was a much more exciting story. the sex scenes are totally unnecessary and i think detracts from the main point of the story.

breach - ryan phillipe is assigned to spy on a fellow FBI agent, suspected as a russian informant. good, true story and performances bit a little sluggish and predictable.

brokeback mountain - again, the sex scenes between the two leads seemed unexpected and full on but the ongoing story of their love was touching and a little heartbreaking. wonderful performance from heath ledger, i can't wait to see him in the new batman

cloverfield - EXCELLENT exciting tale of a giant monster from space destroying new york told from the first person perspective which gave it an edgy dynamic. wish i'd seen it in the cinema.

incredible hulk - bit of a switch-off-brain-watch-film type of blockbuster. munch yer popcorn and watch a very good but blatantly cgi monster smash up cars.
hulk is not a particularly interesting character though and i'm surprised they managed to squeeze out a second film. by the ending of this movie, it seems obvious that a third one is on its way........

Yep, it's mad snowy here again. Me and Ali made a rather foolish journey to the IMAX to see The Dark Knight last night (foolish because of the snow, not because of the film) and it was a proper winter wonderland when we came out hours later. My boots are leaking today. Not good. But we don't get a snow day, largely becuase snow doesn't affect Glasgow's underground. Grrr.

Why have they got you working weekends? That's no fair!
