Sir Alex: We can win it

Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes United can go all the way in the Champions League this season.

United are in Friday's draw at 11:00 GMT for the last eight alongside AC Milan, Chelsea, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, PSV Eindhoven, Valencia and Roma. And Sir Alex thinks the trophy is there for the taking.

The Reds were not on top form against Lille, but Henrik Larsson’s goal was enough to take United through 2-0 on aggregate.

It is the first time United have reached the quarter finals for four seasons – the last being when the Reds were beaten by Real Madrid in 2002/03.

“I think being there is important,” he said. “We have had two bad years in terms of not qualifying for the quarter final stage, whereas before that we had an excellent record.

“But the last eight is not our aim. We want to go as far as we can and reach the final. I look at the possible opponents and no matter which team we get, it’s a big game.

“I don’t think there is a lot between the teams that are left in the competition. Therefore I think we have as good a chance as anyone."

Sir Alex was pleased with the defensive solidarity shown against Lille, which he says will become more important to the Reds the further United progress in the tournament.

“I was really pleased with the performance tonight, especially defensively. That has been the key to our results lately. :)

    'Massive' result delights Boss

Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that United had ridden their luck in registering what he termed a 'massive' win at Anfield.

John O'Shea's injury-time goal was United's only attack of note in a poor display, but the Boss was more than happy to have Lady Luck on his side.

"To be honest Liverpool played fantastic," he told Sky Sports. "We were very lucky today, we had a lot of narrow escapes.

"Really it was one of those games in which I think the pressing of Liverpool upset our rhythm a bit, and they'll be feeling very unlucky today. I think they were.

"It (the result) is massive. I said that last week, that it happens in Championships.

Last week (at Fulham) we broke away and scored in the last couple of minutes, today we broke away and scored in the last minute or so.

"You need a bit of luck to win Championships, there's no question about that, and I think we've got that in the last two weeks."

The result was slightly soured by the loss of Wayne Rooney through injury, having been caught by Jamie Carragher's studs.

"Wayne Rooney's got a knee injury that we'll have to see about tomorrow," revealed Sir Alex. "Wayne will go for a scan. It was a bad tackle - Carragher got :)

    Report: Lille 0 United 1

A quickly-taken free kick from Ryan Giggs gave United a priceless 1-0 win in a controversial Champions League last 16 tie with Lille.

A host of chances had previously gone begging, but Giggs' 84th-minute winner sealed an invaluable lead ahead of the return leg in Manchester in two weeks' time.

Sir Alex Ferguson named an attacking side for the clash at the Stade Félix Bollaert, with Henrik Larsson partnering Wayne Rooney upfront.

Last season's Group D game against Claude Puel's side in Paris saw an inexperienced United side slip to a single-goal defeat.

Sixteen months on, the maturation and reinforcement of United's ranks was embodied by the fact that four full internationals - Gaby Heinze, Alan Smith, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Kieran Richardson - didn't even make the bench.

Such was the wealth of talent at Sir Alex's disposal that his only pre-match worry concerned the state of the Lens pitch. The bulging Reds squad was put through its paces at Lens' training ground on Monday in order to preserve the state of the match surface.

That decision was quickly validated after the commencement of play, with the pitch quickly cutting up under the high tempo action.

The first half-chance of the game fell to the hosts within just two minutes, as Nicolas Favergue headed well over the bar from Peter Odemwingie's left-wing cross.

Within 60 seconds Favergue's misery had snowballed as he became the first player to be booked, following a late challenge on Gary Neville. He was followed into the book by Patrice Evra, back on French soil with United for the first time. The 25-year-old was cautioned for a foul on Mathieu Debuchy.

Despite the early bookings, United's gameplan of containing and probing made for a calmly conducted opening passage of play, but events off the pitch.

    PRESS RELEASE 17-12-07
In an obituary written shortly after Philip Lynotts death, Hot Press's Legendary Rock-writer Bill Graham speculated on the direction Philo's music might have taken. In lamenting his untimely demise, Graham, recalled Dalymount in '77 when Phil was "deservedly King of the City." Later he recalled walking down Sean McDermot Street with Phil and "seen him greeted at every door." In ending his piece Graham wrote "if a man can keep the affections of his friends; it is a worthy epitaph."

Twenty two years on, Bill Graham is no longer with us. Like Philo, he is a tragic, premature, loss to Irish Rock Music. What direction Lynott's music may have taken we can only speculate on, but, having "having kept the affections of his friends" - old and new - the annual Vibe celebration has given us tantalising glimpses as the well known and obscure of the Lynott/Lizzy back-catalogue have been re-interpreted through almost every genre and musical style. While much of this has been by contemporaries, collaborators, and former band members, increasingly it has been by those coming under the Lynott influence many years after his death. In fact, recent Vibes have featured Lynott afficianadoes, many of whom were born, not only after the the break-up of Thin Lizzy, but in a number of cases, after Philo had joined Hendrix, Elvis, Janis, Jim, and other legends in the great gig in the sky.

In recognising this, one of a number of new directions which the Vibe will take includes an all ages matinee - providing a starting point for a whole new generation to "take a ride on the Lizzy-mobile." This will be an alchohol free event, alowing parents to show their kids what "all the noise" was about, under eighteen's to catch the live-music bug with their peers, or those who want to just enjoy the gig to concentrate without the distraction of queing up for a pint.

    Commentary: Roma v Man Utd

93 - Full-time United hold on for a 1-1 draw and Sir Alex Ferguson will be much the happier of the managers at the Stadio Olimpico. Lets just hope both sets of supporters get home okay now. Thanks for joining us and don't forget to check back to the main site for all the news, views, videos and reactions from tonight's game.

90 - ChanceNani had the chance to win it for United, when played through but fired straight at Doni.

88 - Penalty shout Eagles had a shout for a penalty after being played through by Dong. Mexes eased him off the ball, but it certainly wasn't shoulder to shoulder.

85 - Spill Kuszczak spills a shot from Antunes, but Evans cleans up in the middle.

84 - Wide Vucinic plays the ball in for Totti, who dives, and Giuly strikes the ball when it comes out just wide.

    82 - Interchange United

    Report: United 2 Fulham 0

Cristiano Ronaldo netted both goals in a 2-0 victory over Fulham at Old Trafford to send United back to second spot on the Barclays Premier League table.

The result never looked in doubt, with the Reds turning in a scintillating attacking display that ranked up there with United's best of the season. It could have been many more but for a string of missed opportunities and sharp goalkeeping from visiting stopper Antti Niemi.

Sir Alex made four changes to the side that lost at Bolton in the Reds' last league outing, the most notable the inclusion of Wayne Rooney.

Rooney, who injured an ankle in training just 24 days earlier, was initially targeting a return in time for United's trip to Anfield on 16 December. But, just as he did when he fractured a metatarsal earlier this season, the England international defied all expectations to take his place ahead of schedule.

Rooney's first two passes were wayward but his third, a deft flick, sent Cristiano Ronaldo through the middle to kickstart a typically speedy Reds counter-attack.

While Rooney eased his way back into first-team action, Carlos Tevez launched an assault on the Fulham goal. Indeed, the Argentina international could have had a hat-trick within eight minutes.

His close-range header from Anderson's teasing cross somehow went the wrong side of the post before Antti Niemi denied him moments later with a reflex save from 12 yards. A last-ditch tackle saw his third chance deflected over the crossbar but it hardly mattered

My plane leaves in less than 12 hours to head over there. :D

I saw the page and the photo. He sent me a copy of that one by email actually.

Yes, certainly doing a thumbnail gallery. Maybe I'll even get a few minutes to work on it while I'm over there. Work has been crazy busy here to get stuff done before I leave, so much so I've barely had time to sleep, let alone do anything fun like add stuff to his site.
