A Parent's Nightmare
he mangled wrecks of a Subaru Impreza and a Subaru Legacy are all that's left after the cars collided, killing two best mates and injuring four others.
Two best mates killed in a horror crash barely knew the driver but hopped in the car for a quick joyride.
Udo Fourie and Nathan Laurenson, both 18, were killed when the driver of the Subaru Impreza they were passengers in lost control on a corner, crossed the centre-line and slid into an oncoming Subaru Legacy.
The force of the impact in Grays Rd, between Plimmerton and Pauatahanui, about 6pm on Sunday, flipped the Impreza upside down into Pauatahanui Inlet.
A young mother, 19, who was in the Legacy, is critically ill in Wellington Hospital and three other people, including her three-year-old daughter, were injured and taken to hospital.
Family and friends of the dead teens said they barely knew the 22-year-old driver of the Impreza and had only gone for a quick joyride with him in the souped-up car before heading to their nearby Plimmerton homes.
They had been celebrating Udo's birthday - he turned 18 that day - with friends at Peka Peka beach and accepted a ride just to check out the car.
Johan Fourie had sent his son a text message about 5.30pm and Udo replied he would be home in 20 minutes.
Mr Fourie's next text half-an- hour later was never answered.
For Mr Fourie and his wife Elsie, the tragic death holds an uncanny resemblance to the loss of their eldest son Zak, who was killed along with his best friend when the quad bike they were on collided with a tractor on a farm near Kansas City in the United States in 2001.
"It's exactly the same with Udo and Nathan - it's like history repeating itself. Before [Zak's] accident we never thought it would happen. Then you think it could never happen again . . . how wrong you can be," Mr Fourie said.
"We had three boys and now we only have one left."
Though the Impreza driver was the only one in the car to survive, the Fourie family were not resentful. "It was a straight-up accident . . . it was their time to go. I really feel sorry for the driver of the car. Even though I don't know him, my heart goes out to him," Mr Fourie said.
The sentiment was shared by Nathan's parents, Brent and Christine Laurenson.
Mr Laurenson said he held "absolutely no animosity" and would open his home to the driver and his family if it helped with healing.
"There's no anger over it. If he's found culpable he'll have to live with that. Two people are dead and he'll have to carry that for the rest of his life."
Police held forensic examinations on the two cars yesterday. Detective Sergeant Glenn Barnett said it was too early to say if speed was a factor in the crash or if charges would be laid. Everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seatbelt.
Grays Rd was known as a boy-racer haunt and Mrs Laurenson said measures had to be taken to reduce speed.
"They were in the happiest part of life . . . something's got to come out of this, it just can't happen to anyone else."
The Laurensons said the two dead teens were "thick as thieves", having become friends when Nathan introduced himself to Udo, a recent immigrant from South Africa, at an Aotea College art class in 2006.
Ad Feedback Mr Laurenson remembered the pair looking very pleased with themselves after spraypainting Udo's Toyota Corolla a black, white and electric blue cow-skin pattern.
"They went together and whatever they're up to now I know it's quality."
