Mixed reaction to new Riverbank plan

KILDARE County Council has announced the launch of 'OPEN…for ideas', a process of consultation with interested members of the public over the future of Riverbank Arts Centre.
In a statement, they say that it will "engage stakeholders, artists, arts organisations and local communities.
"OPEN…for ideas will include a programme, which is currently being developed, of "arts-based interventions, site-specific performances and once off events.," it reads.
"The consultation will also include formal questionnaires, focus groups, interviews and an ideas wall in Riverbank Arts Centre."
Those interested in contributing can log on to www.kildare.ie/openforideas. Opinions can also be submitted by post, phone or email.
The announcement was welcomed by Cllrs. Pat Black and Spike Nolan, two local county councillors who have also sat on the board of SAM, the organisation that used to run the centre.
They were were confident that it would lead to a brighter future.
The statement does not address what was a divisive issue, that of management of the centre. The Leinster Leader understands that a further announcement on that will be made in early October when the position of a new manager will be advertised.
"It sounds a bit like an artistic colonoscopy," former SAM member John MacKenna told the Leinster Leader.
"It's couched in vague language," he criticised.
"I don't understand why on the one hand they're looking for ideas and yet they're in the throes of developing a calendar of events.
"I'd be wondering who's going to work there if it's going to be open for events, and who's going to staff it.
"Does this mean that the people who lost their jobs can look forward to getting their jobs back?"

This was an article published recently in the Leinster Leader, and many of us KYT members were happy to hear that we would finally have a say in the future of the Riverbank.
Some of the consultation processes left me with alot of questions, such as WHO would the formal questionnaires, focus groups and interviews be with? Members of the Library and Arts Service? Selected members of the Community? or genuine members of the Public who have had little chace to voice their opinions up to this point and have seen another great resource in Newbridge close its doors in the last few months.
As for the ideas wall in the Riverbank Arts Centre, hardly accessible concidering the Riverbank is officially closed to the Public. And therefore only availible to members of the County Library and Arts service who currently occupy the building.
However the online blog was a welcome idea for me - finally a forum which would be very acessible to most members of the public to submit their ideas, availible online for the world to see. Its transparent, fair and acessible to almost anyone, and the results cant be disputed because they're there for everyone to see.
So imagine my dismay when I point my web browser to www.kildare.ie/openforideas to voice my opinion on the blog today (3rd Oct), only to realise that on the second day of the 'consultation with the public', the blog isn't even up and running yet. An e-mail to openforideas@kildarecoco.ie has not yet revealed a reason why.
