In our society today a rapidly growing portion exists---usually teased and taken for granted, often misunderstood and unappreciated. We call them singles. For every married couple today, there is a single. Single people can be classified into three: Never married, formerly married but separated or divorce, and the widowed. The first two have grown enormously in the last few years. Some characteristics of single life makes it unique. It has advantages and disadvantages different from those of couples. It may be helpful in understanding singles better if we consider these.

First, THE ADVANTAGES:

1. Able to live and work according to choice.
When single people decide to move on and live in some area they want because of career changes, they don't have to consult spouses or children as marrieds do. The responsibilities and needs of a family don't stand on their way. When educational opportunities come, singles can act quickly and easily. Of course, they do have roots and restrictions, such as friends and ties, but they're more mobile than married peole.

2. Adaptable to a less complex lifestyle.
Singles can opt for an apartment or a house they like and decorate it as they choose. They can plan meals they desire or not cook at all. Friends and possessions are selected without concern for a spouse's approval. They can read, play, or sleep for hours without bothering anyone. Extended family relationships are less complicated, because fewer people are involved. And of couse, singles are free from parenting hassles and responsibilities.

3. Able to control time.
When single individuals plan, they need not talk this over with a mate or children. They aren't locked into someone else's schedule. Nor are they limited by or responsible for the lives of immediate family members as married people. No getting up in the night to feed the infant and no babysitting either. Although singles take on responsibilities which restrict them, that is their choice, not a necessity.

Today, however, many people do not regard singleness as a gift. They show this by their questions and remarks which often irritate the singles, such as: Why are you still single? I can't understand it---you're such a wonderful person. Has anyone ever asked you to marry? How old are you now? My, you've waited too long! You might not even catch the last trip, etc.
And so the teasing, laughter, and trifling go on. Does this mean that only the married life can be happy and fulfilling? That singles are incompetent persons because they haven't said "I do"? That marriage changes one's disposition? Next time we will deal with these issues, the disadvantages of singleness, and what singles can do to enjoy life.
Meanwhile, people need to understand that God calls some of us to a single life. They need to learn that singles would find it easier to remain content and satisfied in their present status if married people would stop their unkind probing, their intolerance, and their lack of sensitivity
