Scientist are still baffled by the mystery behind the yawn. There is still no know reason and no known cure for it. So why does this abnormality occur?

It is often said that yawns occure mostly when i person suffers from drowsiness and/or boredom. This is only partially true, a yawn will result during the period of transition between each state and its counterpart. i.e. during the change between 'sunday morning syndrome' and being completely alert that an individual is subjected to a yawn.

A commonly suggested theory behind a yawn is that the body indicates a yawn when the muscles near the mouth and jaw require a stretch to expand and retract the several connections around that area. The body does this because after certain period of time without use these muscles, they become compacted. A yawn resolves this with a rountined stretch. Similar to the bodily mucles, a full body stretch is relaxing and comfortable and is often benefitical to the body after a long period of inactivity of the body. This can be considered a 'wake-up call for the muscles'. This is why a yawn is easily triggered when by full body stretch that involves extending both arms in to vertical reach and an optional choice of whether or not to push up on "tippy toes". Drowisness and boredom is often accopanied by the inactivity of the muscles so a yawn is most common when the body is entering or leaving this state. Unfortunately, this does not explain the phenomena of why the yawn is contagious.

Reason why (i believe) yawns are contagious
Yawns are relaxing and is in general good for the body. So when a nearby patron is aware that you have yawned, then there is a higher probability that a yawn will result. This is because after taking in the information your body calculates whether or not it needs a yawn, if the answer is yes then a yawn will result if the answer is no then there will be no yawn, this is a definite answer there is no half-yawn. Why we yawn when we see one can be a result of conformity, and whether or not it will increase the probability of a yawn is not yet known, but individuality vs conformity is a different social issue that does not belong under this title.
