  • You Know What Sucks?

    The fact that you're ALREADY cool without the namedropping, stories of drunkeness, and only going to the "hippest" clubs in town, and how it's all ruined by those things. I thought we had something that was beyond the superficial - we used to, but since you've been here, it's all changed. Auckland sucked you in, good and proper, and it's sad, and more than a little pathetic. Let's talk when Scotty Rocker isn't the most interesting thing you can talk about.

    I am currently on the path to becoming a vegan. I've been vegetarian for awhile, but I figure if I want to do it for the reasons I am doing it, I might as well go the whole way. For those of you who don't know the difference between vegetarianism and veganism, I have consulted with trusty Wikipedia to give you the most thorough answer;

    Vegans do not use or consume animal products of any kind. The most common reasons for becoming a vegan are ethical commitment or moral convictions concerning animal rights, the environment, human health, and spiritual or religious concerns. Of particular concern are the practices involved in factory farming and animal testing, and the intensive use of land and other resources required for animal farming.

    The term "animal product" in a vegan context refers to any material derived from animals for human use. Notable animal products include meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, dairy products, honey, fur, leather, wool, and silk. Common animal by-products include gelatin, lanolin, rennet, whey, casein, beeswax, and shellac.

    The hardest thing to give up by far has been cheese. Because cheese is amazing, haha. But when you realise what goes into cheese, it's a little easier. (FYI, it's the stomach lining of baby cows (rennet)) Honey is pretty hard as well, because it is in a lot of things, so your choices for snacks and stuff goes down dramatically. Milk has been easy to replace, by just using soy, and I'm actually really enjoying soy these days, it's not as disgusting as when I first started using it. Cutting out gelatin means pretty much no more lollies (which is probably better for me in the long run anyway!), - and the other day I gave away my white leather Chuck Taylors, which were my favourite shoes - but it's all for the best in the long run.

    It's been a pretty hard road, and I'm not the perfect vegan, by all means - I've fallen off the vegan wagon a couple of times, but I know it will take awhile to get there, and I'm feeling good about it anyway. Plus, I feel heaps healthier, and I know I'm doing right for the world, and for animals as well! Bonus.
