• Still looking for people to go whisky tasting...

  Well here we are in the middle of the Edinburgh Festival and I'm still looking for people to go whisky tasting with me. I'd happily treat anyone who'd come along with me. Being single means that I often don't have anyone to go to things with, and I'm always chuffed to bits when I can persuade someone to come along. Fortunately I've managed to find people to come and see a couple of shows, though it looks like I'll be going to the Queens Hall tomorrow night to see Eric Bogle. I know folk music isn't everyone's cup of tea but there must be people out there who'd be willing to come along...transport, ticket and interval drink all supplied by me!!
  Work has been quite busy, mainly because people have been taking holidays and I've been covering their shifts. People keep asking me when I'm going to take a holiday but there's not much point as I've no-one to go with. Another consequence of being single is that you end up taking holidays alone....which isn't much fun. I've been doing a lot of competitions to win holidays, as if it's a freebie people might be more inclined to come with me.
  I'm taking some of the residents to Birmingham next month for a five-a-side football tournament. It's open to residents from all the Salvation Army hostels in the UK and this is the first time we'll have taken a team. I don't know how well we'll do, but we'll give it our best shot and it'll be great for some of the lads to get away for a night. I've booked us into a backpackers hostel and hired a 9 seater vehicle. It's not always easy to take part in these things but I've got another staff member who's said she'll come with me, so it's important to nurture her enthusiasm. When I was younger I had so many ideas and was fired with enthusiasm but always got knocked back and belittled. So I decided that I would always support people to follow their dreams, and up to now I think I'm doing a pretty good job.
  I've just got a small amount to do and my Registered Managers Award will be finished. I really need to get it out of the way so that I can concentrate on my MA in Social Sciences. I've got an exam in October then I start a new module in November. It's not cheap but I see it as an investment in my future. I love my job and want to get to the very top. I know I've got the ability and the skills, and I will always give everything I do 110%!!

• Long journeys and live music....

  I went to Doncaster last weekend. It took me over 5 hours to get there, mainly because the English schools had broken up the day before and everyone was on the A1 heading off on their holidays. However, I was taking the opportunity to see two of my favourite bands performing at the same festival. Steeleye Span and Jethro Tull both on the same day....awesome!!!! I love live music and I don't really get to see enough of it, so particularly during festival time in Edinburgh I'm going to see a few performers. I'm going to see Eric Bogle at the Queens Hall and David Ferrard who is performing at a few venues so I'll see how work pans out.
  In September I'm going up to Elgin to see Rod Clements. Rod was the bass guitarist in the folk-rock band Lindisfarne, and when they eventually went their separate ways he carved out quite a successful career for himself as an R'n'B guitarist. He performed at Cabaret Voltaire last year and I really enjoyed it. He's playing at Elgin and I've got a friend up there who's happy for me to spend a couple of nights...and I'll get to visit a couple of distilleries while I'm up there.
  Speaking of whisky, I sent an email out to all my friends about whisky tastings at the Vaults and at Queen Street during the festival. I hoped people might want to come to a tasting with me but unfortunately the response was dismal!!!
  Work is busy at the moment. It's always busy but it's holiday time so I'm covering a lot of shifts for staff holidays. I've just about got my Registered Manager's Award finished now. It has to be finished by the end of September which just gives me enough time to get some revision done for my OU exam. Then I can start another module in November. I'm looking hopefully at a 2011/2012 completion for my MA then depending on finances I'll get my teeth into a PhD. However, until I get all my staff through their SVQs, I can't even think about a PhD for myself.
  Sunderland played Celtic in Glasgow on Saturday and beat them 2-1. I wasn't too sure about Steve Bruce but I think he's going to be a pretty good manager for us. I couldn't get tickets for Saturday. Celtic only released 2,700 tickets for away supporters and they were snapped up very quickly. This Saturday we're playing Hearts at Tynecastle....I've got my tickets for that. My line manager is a Jambo so there has been a fair bit of banter, but I think Sunderland should win it. I don't get to see my beloved Sunderland as often as I should but will try and make it to a few games this season.

• What a heat!!!

  It's hot today. I was at work on a 12 hour shift and I had so much paperwork to do that I really didn't get to spend much time outside. I managed to persuade some of the residents to do a bit of weeding. We've entered the garden in the 'Edinburgh in Bloom' competition, and it's being judged throughout July. When I ever get a day off I need to pay some attention to my own garden which is looking decidedly overgrown. I've had the slabbing sorted out and the guttering fixed, but there's still work to be done. I may not manage a barbecue this summer but I'll certainly do my best. I've had no proper visitors since I had my housewarming party way back in February, and it would be so lovely if people just called round and came to have a meal with me. I eat far too many meals on my own.
  I'm dieting quite seriously at the moment. I've decided to cut out carbohydrates for the month of July, so that means no potatoes, pasta, rice, bread or pastry. Obviously the odd bit of carb will slip through the net, but I'm doing my best to eat a low-fat, high-protein diet with lots of water and as many trips to the gym that I can fit in.
  I had a short holiday last week. I went up to the Isle of Hoy for a couple of days and stayed with friends who retired there last year. They absolutely love it but I'm afraid it's way too quiet for me. There are only 300 people live on the island and they all seem to know each other. It's great for a holiday though and there's loads to see and do. There are some lovely walks, and next time I go I'm going to do the Old Man of Hoy which takes 4 or 5 hours. I had a couple of bottles of Skull Splitter (very strong Orkney beer) in the local pub, and of course a few whiskies. Orkney has 2 distilleries 'Highland Park' and 'Scapa' though it's Highland Park which is best known.
  I've discovered Twitter!!! When I first started on it, I thought it was pretty daft but now I'm fairly hooked and am updating (tweeting) regularly. It's a good way to meet interesting people as despite my best efforts I remain single though I am adhering rigorously to my plan and hopefully by this time next year I may have better news...
