Creamfields 08
Creamfields
10th Anniversary
2008
Daresbury Estate, Halton, Cheshire
23rd and 24th August 2008
Well, that's another miserable summer over and we can all start thinking about bonfire night, doing the xmas shopping, next year's holiday and the January sales and, by then, this festival season will be just a distant memory.
There will be some things worth recalling, though, while we're all shivering round the only radiator in the house we can still afford to turn on thanks to the credit crunch and global forces over which we have no control.
Most of us will have had a good couple of weeks abroad, we'll probably also have managed at least one barbecue (between the showers) and attended a marriage or two.
Oh yes, and we did alright at the Olympics.
For me, though, one of the highlights of this summer was definitely the fact that Creamfields reached the ripe old age of 10.
For this special anniversary Creamfields transformed itself from the excellent night out it has always been to a 2 day music festival with on-site camping.
The music policy underwent a change as well.
Of course the world's top DJs were all there, as usual, headed up by Tiesto, Van Dyk, Prydz, Halliwell, Van Doorn, the Swedish House Mafia, etc etc, but this year, for the first time there was a roster of live bands who could have formed a mini festival on their own.
The Presets, Pendulum, Gossip, Kissy Sell out LIVE, Chic, Ian Brown, The Whip and Kasabian (amongst others) were all featured and the innovative and compelling 'Streetwaves' stage showcased some excellent young bands.
Streetwaves
Streetwaves is an annual music competition, now organised by Liverpool City Council, and is a chance for talented, local, musicians aged between 14 and 25 to take their first step in the music industry, get advice from interested and supportive professionals and, ultimately, to gain invaluable performance experience and public exposure.
A series of heats is held in each Merseyside borough and each of Liverpool's five neighbourhood areas and the 'most ready' acts are given the chance to play at a series of high profile music events during the summer, including Creamfields.
In addition to this, as part of the 'Cities on the Edge' project, there were also bands from various European cities who had taken part in similar competitions in their own regions. The full roster of bands, over the 2 days, was as follows:
Bremen, Germany, Black Night Crash
Istanbul, Turkey: Karavan
Marseille, France: Les Alcoolytes
London: Vocal Siblings
Liverpool: Metropolitans
St Helens: Red Orchestra
Knowsley: Post War Wage Slaves
Sefton: 909
The Wirral: The Dead Teddies
Liverpool City and North: Aspen Grove
Liverpool South: Beaker Folk of the Bronze Age
Liverpool South Central: Systems DMC
Liverpool Alt Valley: The New Haze
Liverpool East: The Little Hydes
Gdansk, Poland: California Stories Uncovered
Naples, Italy: Pipers
They all had their own unique style and, to be honest, varying degrees of technical and musical ability and stagecraft, but they all played with commitment and feeling .
It's invidious to say who was good and who was bad, because they were all good, but the bands I enjoyed then most were: Systems DMC; who had a wicked confection of punk, hip hop and freestyling that was as refreshing as it was entertaining; Beaker Folk of The Bronze Age, whose lyrics and guitar work impressed me a great deal, Aspen Grove, The Little Hydes and, finally, California Stories Uncovered, who were also very good and I would recommend you look them up.
With thanks to Gordon Ross.
'Being Silent Isn't Being Strong' is the message of the Campaign Against Living Dangerously and forms part of their approach to the problem of suicide amongst young men through the medium of music.
Cream has been involved with Calm since it started and are proud to support the extremely valuable work they do.

Alex Kidd
What A Year
I Kidd You Not!
------------------------------
Hundreds of the 2½ thousand people who attended the excellent TW11 at Pontin’s in Prestatyn back in March 2007 were privileged to see an impromptu performance, on the Sunday afternoon, by Alex Kidd.
This unscheduled affair took place in the cold afternoon sun, outside someone’s chalet, and soon drew a large and appreciative crowd.
Alex was banging out tunes for fun and, as the word spread and the crowd got bigger, so did the tunes.
It was, without doubt, one of those occasions where people say afterwards “I wish I’d been there!” I still can’t think about that weekend without hearing Loops and Tings and seeing Alex playing air violin.
This happening has now gone into legend as “Kiddfields”
This was the first time I had ever seen Alex Kidd.
I was blown away by the experience and decided to ‘stalk’ Alex for the rest of the year to see if he was a just a flash in the pan, or whether he really was as good as he seemed to be that afternoon.
The next time I saw him he was playing at the opening night of a new club in Glasgow called ‘The Clinic’ where he was just as good as I remembered, despite the fire alarm going off part way through his set.
He absolutely stormed the place.
The following night he was to be found blasting the Tidy tent apart at the excellent Coloursfest, also in Glasgow.
I managed to catch a few words with him after.
Amongst all the usual questions about what he’d been up to and where he’d been playing lately I asked him what he’d got planned for the rest of the summer and this is how I found out about Kiddstock, which was to be Alex’s first foray into promoting a gig as well as playing at it.
And what a debut it turned out to be.
Held on a remote farm in the wild north of England, and featuring 30+ DJ’s and 500+ specially selected fans of the best hard dance music on offer, it was a mini festival that, for me, was one of the highlights of last summer.
The atmosphere was fabulous; it was well organised and everyone there had an absolutely brilliant time and, at £10 a ticket, was surely the best value for money any clubber has had in a long time.
Top club brand Goodgreef (who have had a great year, especially at Amnesia in conjunction with Cream) and club clothing and lifestyle brand Contagious were on board as co-promoters/sponsors and, with the passion and commitment shown by everyone involved, it’s hard to see how this could have been any better
Apart from the mutant smoke machine in the main tent, obviously.
Alex himself, Matt Hadder, Mark EG, Kym Ayres, Kutski and Gary Proud were outstanding, though it’s probably not fair to single them out because everyone who played there was absolutely on top form.
The next time I was due to see Alex was at Globalgathering, but I got stuck in traffic and missed him, so I had to wait until Creamfields which, for me, is easily the friendliest, best organised and most compulsory dance festival in the country.
Despite some problems with the volume levels (noise abatement… can’t upset the 20 people who live within half a mile of the site!) Alex totally nailed the crowd in the Tidy tent with some blistering tracks.
And then there was TW12, in October, which was even better.
Not only was it the most successful Tidy Weekender since TW5 (under the new head of events, Keiron Gallagher) but the standard of music was just incredible and the roll call of DJ talent on offer couldn’t be bettered anywhere.
Alex’s set was amazing.
Which brings us nicely to his appearance, on New Year’s Day 2008, at Mission, in Leeds, for Goodgreef vs Sundissential.
As Julius Caesar said after upon arriving in England in 55BC… “Veni, Vidi, Vici.” (If you didn’t do Latin at school - and I didn’t in case you’re wondering; I saw this on the back of a beer mat years ago- it means ‘I came, I sa0 Commentaren 712 dagen

Sunshine at Last
Cream @ Amnesia
Ibiza
July 5th 2007
________________
Well, the weather boffins have been telling us for years now that the climate is changing…. we’ve been promised Mediterranean sunshine and never having to buy another umbrella or pair of Wellingtons as long as we live. Bloody scientists, what do they know?
Instead we get the wettest June in the entire history of the world and rising damp in our walls and joints.
The month started off ok with the excellent Coloursfest in Glasgow, though it did drizzle during the night. The following weekend I was on the banks of Loch Ness for the Rock Ness festival, where I got sunburnt on the Saturday and hypothermia on the Sunday.
Two weeks later I was at the excellent, new, Knowsley Hall festival where there were brilliant performances from bands as diverse as The Who, Madenss, The Thrills, The Zutons, Miss King and the Cougars, Keane, Joss Stone, The Hoosiers and many others.
This is the Knowsley Festival’s first year and I recommend you check it out next year because the quality of the music on offer was first rate.
Sadly, the weather was not, as the whole weekend was a mud bath from start to finish. I had a great time despite being soaked from head to foot and caked in mud.
Never mind, I thought to myself, next weekend I’m going to the Sanctuary Festival, near Winchester in the south of Englan, where it’s bound to be warm and balmy for the last weekend in June.
There was a fabulous line-up on offer with the cream of the hard dance and hard core scene offering up a weekend of banging tunes.
I could not have been more wrong. I arrived at 3pm and left at 7 cos I just could not abide the thought of spending another 12 hours in the rain and the mud.
You can imagine I was getting pretty pissed off by this time, having spent 3 out of 4 weekends either getting wet or trying to get dry.
The solution was simple www.Jet2.com flight No LS197 from Leeds & Bradford Airport to Ibiza, departing Leeds at 8.30pm, 2½ hours later I was taxiing down the runway on the White Isle.
Stepping off the plane on Monday night (2nd July) it was so nice to feel the heat I damn near cried with relief, and waking up the next morning to blazing sunshine and 24 degrees celcius was like dying and going to heaven.
So far so good.
Now I had to decide how I was going to fill the time between the evening meals and the morning hangovers.
Tuesday was no problem as Tidy are at Eden in San Antonio every Tuesday night, so that suited me fine as I like nothing better than to get a a bit of hard house in at the beginning of the week.
The excellent Tidy Boys were on the decks when I arrived and were pumping out their usual blend of banging tunes old and new to a club packed with happy hard house fans. They were followed by the up and coming Kym Ayres who raised the roof with a brilliant set that never flagged from start to finish.
Watch this girl; she is steadily building up a loyal following and gets better and better every time I see her.
On Wednesday I decided I would have a bit of a chill (it’s my age, you know) and took myself off to KM5; surely the coolest bar in Ibiza.
It’s been providing tranquil candle lit surroundings and chilled out relaxing music for 30 years, now, and should be on everyone’s itinerary.
From there I went to Bar Guarana in the harbour in Santa Eularia. I first discovered this bar about 3 years ago and usually try and spend the last hour of the night there before going to bed.
I was up on Thursday morning (actually, to be honest, it was well into the afternoon) feeling totally relaxed and ready for anything and wondering whether Amnesia had managed to resolve their difficulty with the local authorities which had meant them being unable to open for the first few weeks of the season.
The reason I was keen to know if Amnesia would be open is that Thursday night is Cream night at Amnesia (and0 Commentaren 895 dagen
