O flower of Scotland
O flower of Scotland
When will we see your like again
That fought and died for
Your wee bit hill and glen
And stood against him
Proud Edward's army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again
The hills are bare now
And autumn leaves lie thick and still
O'er land that is lost now
Which those so dearly held
And stood against him
Proud Edward's army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again
Those days are passed now
And in the past they must remain
But we can still rise now
And be the nation again
That stood against him
Proud Edward's army
And sent him homeward
Tae think again0 Comments 280 weeks

The Piping Hepburns
The Piping Hepburns
Few Pipe bands, if any, can boast of such a unique family record as Turriff can, with the name of Hepburn stretching over three generations of dedicated service to piping.
The story begins way back in the Twenties, with a young lad, 13 and a half years old, wending his way homewards from the local agricultural show. The name of that young lad was George Hepburn and as fate would have it, his route homewards took him past the town's Union Hotel where, standing at the entrance, was the owner, George Simpson, accompanied by two pipe band members, Charles Donald and Jock Morrison.
Something about the lad's demeanour, dressed as he was in his kilt, attracted the attention of Mr Simpson, who was prompted to invite George to "come and join the pipe band" - an invite readily endorsed by his two companions; thus George joined the band. Little did they realise that their simple invitation would lead to the famous piping dynasty of the
Hepburn family.
William Hepburn first took an interest in the bagpipes when he was nine years old being taught the scales on the practise chanter by his father and how the read and understand the music. Playing with the Home Guard Band during the Second World War as a novice piper he continued with his apprenticeship under Pipe Major James Robertson of Banff. In 1948, to
further advance his skills, he travelled to Balmoral to study under Pipe Major R.U. Brown, one of the Queen's Pipers. Called up for national service in 1950, Bill served for two years with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders. On his return home his enthuasiasm for the bagpipes continued unabated and very soon he was gaining many honours for his skilful playing or marches, strathspeys and reels at various contests throughout the region.
William Hepburn, Jnr, recalls "with the bagpipe always being played in the house, it was only natural that some day I would get hold of the practise chanter and try to get a tune from it!". Joining the band at the age of 11 it wasn't very long before Billy was beginning to make a name for himself playing at events all over Scotland. In 1971, he brought further honouor to the band and himself by winning the Scottish Junior Championship at St Andrews, an indication surely of the prospect of his one day continuing the family ranks. In 1981 love blossomed within the ranks when Billy married "fellow" piper Jackie Taylor, thus adding to the Hepburn dynasty.
Jackie Hepburn began taking lessons on the chanter in the "Black Bar" of the town's Union Hotel, a venue of fond memories for the older members of the band! Progressing to the bagpipes at the age of 14, Jackie was soon a permanent member of the band, playing at many memorable outings. An initial disappointment during the early Seventies was being unable to play at the Braemar Gathering owing to their ban on female pipers performing there.0 Comments 349 weeks
