- Hello folkies, and welcome to my bebo profile
I'm Andrew (or Cuthy) and I doing a BSc (Hons) degree in Sociology at the University of Abertay Dundee. Which, funnily enough, is in Dundee.
And, funnily enough, people actually ask me where the University of Abertay DUNDEE is. Strange. But true
There are only 3 reasons (or "core" reasons) why you've decided to visit my bebo page.
1. You wish to read my blogs - which are both fruitful and highly funky in their content.
2. You're being nosey. You've heard I said something about something, and you think that a possible argument, or clue, has cultimated on this profile. Hence why you're here.
3.You're nosey. You want to know what "Cuthy has been up to" - maybe at my time at university, or from those who are at Abertay - what I get up to at home. Likewise, you may wish to contact me, and further fuel your nosiness.
You see, that is actually the ONLY idea of bebo. To be nosey. And to justify it

Alex Mcpherson
Never usually bother writing about mates and that, but I might just do that now. I've been mates with Alex since P6 when he first came up from the mighty Chippenham. Before that, I actually lived just down the street from him - although I never knew that at the time. Alex is a cracking mate, has a shite taste in music (Hannah Montana MY ERSE) and thinks the Scottish Labour is good (am I right?). AAAAAAAAAA HAHAHAHA. Thanks for sticking by mate. Toodles.

Liam M
Liam once lead the rebel movement against the Duffus Militia - resulting in the destruction of the Duffus Parliament building - also known as the bus stop. Now, with £500 of tax-payers money, the council has put a wall and a metal roof togetehr and claimed it as a bus "shelter". The local councillor drives to work. ANYWAY, like me, Liam is a grumpy git - and we tend to maon about: roads, the council, roads, Mars Bars and the the very man that eats them, the council, the council and the council.

Lord Maximillian Ridgeforce
Paddy originates from the far lands of Ireland - where the main exports are feckin good music (U2, Bono, The Corrs, Thin Lizzy, The Pogues, Christy Moore), potatoes, Guiness, Magners and great poetry. He's a cracking Irish manny, enjoys a good debate (you could actually make a trilogy from the discussions) and plays rugby. He gives better advice than Gandalf, has views more controversial than George Galloway and has a better taste in women than Pierce Brosnan (also Irish!)

Sam once believed that ...... the guitarist of ..... was MP for...... (couldn't put the whole thing - she'd kill me :-P). Sam's a good mate, and like Alex - has a dreadful taste in music (except maybe that Jonas Brother's song with that "red dress" lyric in it). We've had many a good times - in 5th Year Modern Studies with Mr Stuart and in 6th Year Spanish. We'll never forget yeh!

Hey Gemma Gemma Hay
My good husband in crime - Gemma - is a good mate, we've been mates for years now, and she's a good laugh. She likes WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANGER and a bit of Rose Red Wine too - we've both been tipsy many a time min. Good times were dancing to Snoop Dogg's "Sensual Seductttion" and making a willy from a Jenga set. LOOL.

The Re-Birth of R.E.M.
(Read the full blog here: http://toulacaxehand.livejournal.com/)
The first snippet of news, about 6 months ago today, of Peter Buck and Mike Mills of R.E.M., recording some demos for the follow-up to their 2008 album “Accelerate”, filled me with curiosity at how much of a “follow-up” the next album will be.
Accelerate - though widely viewed as an average album in R.E.M.’s extensive catalogue - is by far one of my favourite rock records. The sheer urgency of the “make-or-break” record really brings out the best in R.E.M., and stops them from taking a U2 approach to things and sitting comfortably whilst throwing the odd record out every 5 years. The album portrays the band as a new band, off the streets in Athens, Georgia, and hoping for a slot in the music-industry.
R.E.M. have had a very difficult 10 years – which ended with the release of Accelerate. The release of their 1998 record: Up, saw them come at music from a different angle – using keyboards, synth-sounds and drum machines – something R.E.M. had never really engaged with to such an extent. Further albums: Reveal and Around the Sun followed the same criteria, and were not particularly popular among their U.S. fan-base (although their popularity increased in Europe).
However, new album: Accelerate, harkens back to the Bronze Age R.E.M., with such jewels as Murmur, Reckoning and Document – and of course the odd special record like Dead Letter Office – where both instrumental and lyrical experimentation was the main-stay of there records.
I hope the new record follows the same pattern.
Peter Buck is back in (Chronic) Town!

The "Bain" of the SNP
(See the blog in full here: http://toulacaxehand.livejournal.com/ )
The win of the Labour candidate Willie Bain was a land-slide victory for Labour, and an egg-in-the-face defeat for the SNP. It presented yet more media- backlash against a popular and transparent government. Yet again, the broadsheets and the national newspapers continue to ridicule and down-play any attempt by the Scottish National Party to offer the people of Scotland a choice in their constitutional future.
The Labour win in the Glasgow-North-East by-election showed us a few things – that the Labour Party are still quite clearly popular – indeed despite the colossal public debt of Gordon Brown, two botched wars and the expenses scandal – support for the party is still strong. It was clear that the party was taking the election seriously, and to some extent the competition of the SNP, with Gordon Brown heading down to see off the nationalists.
It showed that David Cameron is not only attempting to win the hearts of Labour and SNP voters, but has also opened the Conservative Party up to equality, by choosing a lesbian candidate – Ruth Davidson – to challenge a strong seat in Glasgow and beat the BNP to third place.
It showed that support for the SNP has increased incredibly since the General Election in 2005, and reflects an increasing desire for the people of Scotland to decide their own constitutional future.
However, I do believe that support for the SNP, and the honey-moon period of the party (which they have enjoyed for 2 years running), is drawing to a close. I anticipated a much higher vote for the Nats, and unfortunately it seems that wasn’t the case.
I don’t think Cameron’s Government in Westminster will be “dancing to a Scottish jig” next year Mr Salmond.

Rant: From Labour with Love
(See this blog in full here: http://toulacaxehand.livejournal.com/ )
Yesterday, UK Home Secretary Alan Johnston “admitted” that Labour has encouraged the popularity of the British National Party, due to its relaxed immigration policies.
For starters, what is there to “admit” about? Has immigration really damaged the UK economy? I’d like to see the facts and figures from the main political parties, from newspapers and from “experts” on immigration! Scotland, a country suffering from depopulation year-on-year and an ageing population, could really benefit from immigration.
Many immigrants carry useful skills and qualifications, that put them well into the £40,000+ salaries, in the NHS (struggling to find skilled surgeons etc), in dentistry, in law and other vital areas of the economy. This wage mark also means a majority of immigrants will be taxed – just the same as every other high-earning individual.
It is stupid to tar all immigrants with the same brush. Not everyone from Romania works in the sex industry; the vast majority of Middle-Eastern people are not terrorists; men in Ghana do not kidnap and rape women on a day-today basis; and Polish people do not “steal” jobs.
All the main political parties – except the Scottish National Party (who talk of integration and a diverse culture) – want to put a “cap on immigration”.
Indeed, even the newly refurbished and renovated Conservative Party want tighter controls on immigration.
It looks to me that the political parties are now feeding off the immigration-frenzy of the media, and are seeking to win-back BNP voters.
Can Labour please go back to 2006, when they said immigration has benefitted the economy? Or back to the 2009 Labour Party Conference, and the speech of Peter Mandelson – in which he talked of a “globalised economy”.
