JIMMY MURRAY
(COMMENT POSTED ON WEDNESDAY 24/1/07)The GREATEST EVER ROSCOMMON PLAYER DIED YESTERDAY! JIMMY MURRAY!!!! Very few men like him in roscommon. We have lost a true sportsman and the man that every1 in the country involved with football knew. He will be sadly missed and was a great inspiration to any roscommon footballer. We gave him the Tommy Markham Cup this year, it was like he waited for it. A TRUE LEGEND!! Farwell! You will be missed!!!!

  • Roscommon Supporters Club 2009

A meeting of all interested Roscommon GAA supporters will be held in Hannons Hotel, Roscommon on Wednesday next at 9pm to re-establish the Roscommon GAA Supporters Club

The meeting is open to all GAA supporters in the county, young and old. It is not necessary to be a member of a GAA club or actively involved in GAA activities. The only requirement is a passion for Roscommon GAA.

The Supporters Club seeks to establish a committee that will provide support for all GAA activities in the county. In addition the club will provide a social outlet for members by organising functions, outings to GAA activities and other such events.

As well as assisting GAA activities currently taking place in the county the club will also link in to other Roscommon GAA Supporters Clubs in existence in the country.

If you would like to get involved in the club come along to Wednesday night’s meeting. Your support will be most welcome.

  • Scór Sinsear/ Photos

    Scór Sinsear
Applications forms have been distributed to all clubs and must be returned on or before Wednesday the 18th of February. The semi-finals are scheduled to take place on Friday February 27th and Saturday February 28th in Culleen Hall, Lecarrow and St. Barrys Clubhouse, Tarmonbarry, respectively.
Following the recent Scór na nÓg County Final Chairman of Roscommon County Board Michael McGuire made a special plea to all clubs who have not taken part in Scór this season to make a special effort for Scór Sinsear as this is the 40th year of the competition and the 125th anniversary of the GAA as a whole.

    Photographs
Coiste Scór Ros Comáin is asking people to search their photo albums, attics etc for photographs of Scór competitors from days gone by. It does not matter if the photographs are from 1977 or 2007, all offers would be greatly appreciated. All material submitted to Coiste Scór will be carefully labelled and stored in a safe place before being returned to owner. For more information leave a comment ->

  • Double Success for Roscommon

It was a day of mixed fortunes for Roscommon clubs competing at the Connacht Scor Na nÓg finals, which were held in the Town Hall, Claremorris on Saturday last.

The first result of the afternoon to be known was from the Question Time competition, where the team of Michael Keane, Finbar McDermott and Gerard McDermottroe claimed an impressive victory. This was the eighth year in a row that the Question Time title was won by a team from Roscommon. They missed just two questions in defeating Ardrahan, from Galway, Ballintubber from Mayo, St. Farnans from Sligo and Fenagh St. Callians from Leitrim, achieving a score of 52 points. Last year Kilglass Gaels were victorious and then went on to capture All-Ireland success so lets hope that Ballinameen can follow in their footsteps.

As usual, with all Scór events, the Question Time is followed by the Novelty Act and Set Dancing competitions. The results are then passed to the Fear an Tí, who announces the winners, so all of the other competitors have a long wait to learn their fate.

The first result announced was for the Figure Dancing competition there was disappointment for St. Dominics as Glencar-Manorhamilton from Co. Leitrim were the victors.

In the Solo Singing contest Emma Brogan of Strokestown sang “The Lovely Sweet Banks Of The Moy” but she lost out to her Sligo counterpart, Niamh Farrell from the St. Marys club. Clann na nGael played the “Black Frog” and “Maeves Reel” in the Instrumental Music competition but the title went to Corofin from Galway.

The next result to be announced was for Recitation and there were great cheers from the large Roscommon contingent when James Murrays name was announced. The man from the St. Dominics club earlier had the sell-out crowd in fits of laughter with his performance of “Stage Fright”.

Sean O’Heslins, from Co. Leitrim, retained the Ballad Group title despite a great performance from the St. Barrys team who performed “Eileen Óg” and “Galway Bay”. Ballinameen were the next team called on stage to receive their medals for their earlier Question Time triumph. Unfortunately Roscommon’s success ended there.
The Novelty Act competition, where Roscommon were represented by Padraig Pearses, went to Mountbellew-Moylough from Galway. The last title of the evening also went to a Galway club – Abbeyknockmoy. Dancing “The Roscommon Lancers” the defeated Strokestown, who danced “The Plain Set”.

As mentioned above the All-Ireland Final takes place in the Count John McCormack Hall, Athlone I.T. on Saturday the 21st of February at 3pm. The county will receive a limited number of tickets for the final and those interested in attending should contact Scór Secretary Thomas Murray on (086) 3853804. Please note that as demand is expected to exceed supply, tickets will be issued on a first come, first served basis. The closing date for applications is 5pm on Friday 30th and no orders will be taken after that date.
