Bartemius "Barty" Crouch Junior is the son of Barty Crouch Sr and Mrs Crouch.

Barty Junior was apparently a very talented young wizard, gaining 12 O.W.L's at Hogwarts. He left school at the height of Voldemort's powers and his father, intent on catching dark wizards and becoming Minister for Magic failed to pay any attention to his son.

After Voldemort's first defeat in 1981 Crouch Jr became involved with Death Eaters and was captured with three other wizards responsible for torturing Frank and Alice Longbottom attempting to gain information on Voldemort's whereabouts and how to restore him to power. Although he proclaimed his innocence his father, who headed the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the time, put him on trial, using this as an excuse to publically show his dislike for his son, and sentenced him to life imprisonment in Azkaban at the age of nineteen.

His father kept him under control of the Imperius Curse and forced him to hide under an Invisibility cloak at all times. Crouch was nursed back to health by Winky, the family's house-elf. Bertha Jorkins discovered the truth accidentally, and Lord Voldemort extracted this information from her several years later by breaking the memory charm placed on her by Crouch Sr. Voldemort rescued Crouch and put his father under the Imperius Curse. Crouch then kidnapped Mad-Eye Moody and, with the help of the Polyjuice Potion, took over Moody's job of teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts

The Triwizard Tournament was being held that year and Crouch had to make sure that Harry won. Crouch found out from Snape, when Harry Potter raised the alarm, that his father had escaped from Voldemort and found his way into the school grounds. He stunned Viktor Krum, killed his father and dragged his dead body into the Forbidden Forest. He showed up as Moody when Dumbledore arrived, and was told to find Crouch Snr, so he returned to Crouch's body, turned it into a bone, and later buried it.

Before the third and final task of the tournament, he volunteered to place the Triwizard Cup in a maze through which the contestants were to navigate. He took advantage of this opportunity and turned the cup into a portkey which transported Harry Potter and Cedric Diggory to a graveyard when they took it together. Harry's blood was to be used to bring Voldemort back to power. The plan succeeded, but Cedric was killed and Harry escaped with Cedric Diggory's body.
