Über mich

Ich über mich
I am the Caleb who is also known as Delta, Maestro and Jim. As a result, I am, as I understand, an approximately human being of the male gender with (usually) substantial quantities of dark hair, a notable interest in philosophy, a curious obsession with Volkswagen automobiles and a penchant for ska music. I am an adherant of the Christian religion, not so much because it seems like a nice thing to play with as because it is actually and absolutely true, to the exclusion of all else. If this means you instantly hate me for my lack of tolerance and my extreme views, I would like to take a moment to note how extreme your view is and wonder why you can't tolerate me.
Music
Ska and punk: Supertones, Five Iron Frenzy, Insyderz, Sounds Like Chicken, Frugals, Relient K, Brave Saint Saturn, Roper, etc.
Films/TV
X-men and X-men 2. Fantastic 4. Buffy, Firefly, Serenity. Stargate. All that sort of fun stuff.
Sports
Soccer: AC Milan, Athletic de Bilbao, the mighy Wigan, and the actually mighty Olympique Lyonnais
Scared Of
Flying purple people eaters

  • On love, crushes, emotions and bebo

    What is love?

It's a question philosophers have debated for centuries, and it's a question that has many facets to it. But isn't it a little curious that here on Bebo (and on myspace and on plenty of other places where teenagers tend to gather online) it seems that everyone... acts as though they know the answer?

And what is that answer? Well, from what I can gather, the general consensus is something along the lines of feeling your heart beat fast when you're around someone; not being able to think of anything but some person; being distracted by their hair or their clothes or their scent, or an array of other things that all contribute to this so-called love. So apparently it's some kind of emotion, or otherwise a state of mind.

The latter view is inevitably more popular when this alleged love abruptly crashes and burns. People get rejected or break up or whatever else and suddenly love is a state of mind, something that they're annoyed about or wish hadn't happened.

Not so in the early stages. Apparently then, love is powerful, it's a great thing, it feels good... there's a million quizzes out there to tell you whether or not you're in love right now, and the answer is usually yes.

Is it me, or is this entire view of love really, unbelievably weak?

I believe in a love that is worth a whole lot more than any of that. Because that stuff I've just mentioned? It's an emotion. It's a feeling. It's fleeting. It's fun while it lasts in its own way, but basically, it's a crush or an infatuation and given some time? It's going to be gone.

Love, on the other hand, lasts forever.

But love isn't something that just happens to you, either. Far from it. These emotions hit you and they can be hard to deal with if the target is someone who, say, doesn't want you, or who is going out with someone else. But you -can- deal with it. Heaven knows I have.

Love, though, is -your- decision. Love is a commitment. Love is a verb. You don't just fall into love by accident, though it can happen gradually and not seem like a spur of the moment choice. But once you have made that commitment to love someone... that means a whole lot more than just a feeling.

The penultimate love that is ever shown is that of a husband to his wife. The Bible says that a husband is called to die for his wife if necessary. Why? Because he is called to love her. That's love. He can't back out because he doesn't feel that way any more. He's called to -die-.

The ultimate love is shown by Jesus Christ, who did die for it.

I dunno if y'all are even going to read this. But please... enough of this airy-fairy pretend love carry-on. Make sure that real love is what you want before you go asking for it. And if you don't? Well, think about what your motives are for getting into a relationship in the first place.

Meh, I'm going too far for any one blog. Stopping now. Have a nice day.

  • On teenagers who think they know stuff (and don't)

Again, it's a copy and paste. If you've read it before... that's why.

I'm in a poetical mood, so... let's see what happens. I hope you hate it.

    Incited by the issues
    Fighting the good fight
    But who exactly are you?
And what gives you the right?
    Pronouncing judgment here and there
    On issues far and wide
    On Israel and Lebanon
    And homosexual pride
    You haven't yet informed me
As to how you know this "truth"
    An ethical dilemma
Which you hide behind your youth
    I have epistemology
    I know that I exist
    I have a moral knowledge
    Which I'm hopeless to resist
But these things are not possible
    For someone in your place
They come by Jesus Christ alone
    Creator of our race
What value do your marches have?
    Your rallies for your rights?
When I know that wisdom only comes
    By fear of Jesus Christ?

Mmkay, I don't know where to go from there. If you couldn't guess, it's about my most beloved friend, the UWA Student Guild. =) Don't worry. This doesn't happen to me often. I'll go back to being deadpan now. Have a nice day.

  • On exanimation and third wave ska

This, like the following entry, is cut and pasted from myspace:

I just set my current mood to 'exanimate'. This does not describe how i feel at this time. I simply looked down the list and picked the first word I didn't know the meaning of. So, for your education and mine, here is a quote from the almighty Dictionary.com:

    exanimate
adj: deprived of life; no longer living; "a lifeless body" [syn: lifeless]

Anyway, having educated you on that crucial point, thus changing the very foundation of your existence, I'm going to move on to talk about something else. First: I wanted to tell you what I was listening to with the almighty "Tell us what you're listening to" thing at the bottom of the editor. But apparently, Five Iron Frenzy does not rate inclusion in the Myspace list of awesome and almighty music. Anyway, since it means so much to you that you become aware of this, I am presently listening to Five Iron Frenzy's recording of their final show. Specifically, at the time of writing, the song "Old West".

Laura knows of Brave Saint Saturn! I am enamoured by the prospect that someone else in my sphere of acquaintance actually listens to a band with Reese Roper in it. Seeing as how I listen to all of his bands. Well, except Exhumator. But I have no guilt. Five Iron Frenzy's early stuff is poorly recorded enough, I see no reason to expose myself to That Which Cometh Before.

If you have not heard of Five Iron Frenzy, SHAME UPON YOU AND YOUR OFFSPRING. To the thirteenth generation. Or something like that. Ahem. What I mean to say is that you should RIGHT NOW be going to http://www.growsomebrains.com/rarefif/ and listening. Your musical education is more important than finishing the reading of this blog entry! Admittedly, I should warn you that the mp3 files found on that site are generally lacking in recording quality. Actually, very much so. So don't judge them on the that. Whatever. Talk to me some time when I have my iPod and I will show you their real music.

You may hate it. That's your prerogative. If so, then... well, I may have to exanimate you. (See, I just used the new word in a sentence. Be proud. That's right. It's a verb too.)

What else can I babble about? I had a thought about SWMud PK and its relation to certain principles found in Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. I'm aware that noone knows what I'm talking about, but isn't it interesting that whenever you develop a new strategy, a new way to use a piece of equipment or whatever, you only get 2-3 boots of use of that before everyone has copied you? Success is given to the continually, freshly creative PKers rather than those who can come up with one idea. Hmm.

I bet noone who knows what I was just talking about will ever read this blog. I don't care. =)

Anyhow, on the subject of books that I am, by loose tangent, sort of speaking about, I have just finished reading The Final Prophecy by Greg Keyes. My favourite character in the whole NJO died. Oh well, just one book to go and the New Jedi Order will be defeated! Seriously, 18 books down, one to go. I know you all feel my pain.

Um, I want to write something witty and amusing, but I've got nothing. Sleeping must be due. Good night to all and sundry, and remember: Do not be emo. That is all.
