- The Libertines joined the pop fray of 2002, competing with the likes of the Strokes, Hives, Vines, and Doves with their debut single, "What a Waster." The Bernard Butler-produced track entered the U.K.'s Top 40 in June, leaving NME to crown the Libertines as the best new band in Britain. The double-A-side song "I Get Along" earned Single of the Week on BBC Radio 1. The London-based band, who inked a deal with Rough Trade in December 2001, features Carl Barat (guitar/vocals), Pete Doherty (guitar/vocals), John Hassall (bass), and Gary Powell (drums). Up the Bracket was released stateside in March 2003 while the single Time for Heroes gained momentum on the U.K. charts.

Rumor has it the former Libertines bandmates were offered a joint record deal at a U.K. festival this weekend.

Former Libertines bandmates Pete Doherty and Carl Barat may reunite after being offered a record deal. The B-Unique label, which houses Kaiser Chiefs and the Automatic, asked Doherty and Barat (who front Babyshambles and Dirty Pretty Things, respectively) to release a charity single, and are in talks to offer the pair a full record deal, according to the U.K. paper, The Sun. The frontmen have already laid down vocals for a cover of the Clash's "Janie Jones," which will raise money for the late Clash frontman Joe Strummer's charity, Strummerville, the paper reports.
"Pete is now without a record deal and there have been loads of behind-the-scenes talks with lots of labels," a source told The Sun. "Some labels think he is a pariah figure who shouldn't be touched because of his drug-taking and bad behavior. But others think he is a good signing because his fame can translate into record sales. B-Unique are determined to sign Pete and want Carl on board too. They met up with Carl at Reading to move things forward. It will all be confirmed in the coming weeks."5 Comments 1169 days
