I give up. I'm coming home.

Makes me sound weak, but I don't care. I've been here three months, and I hate it.

But then again, you'd all hate it too, if you weren't getting paid for the work you're doing, and you can't even afford to catch a train into the city to apply for other jobs.

So, after three months of being poor, and having to borrow for everything I've got, I'm going home. Where things are easier, and I actually have close enough to the freedom I came here for. Sorry if I didn't meet your expectations, but this has been one of the worst decisions of my life, and the only way to put it right is to start again from scratch.

So,

I want to know what people think of long-distance relationships.
-Do they work?
-How far is too far?
-How long could you go without seeing your significant other?
-Does the relationship still count as long-distance if you haven't met, or is that just wishful thinking?

The reason I ask is that, personally, I had always disagreed with them, and thought that a long-distance relationship could never work, until I got involved with someone shortly before leaving NZ.
I assumed that our relationship wouldn't really be able to continue in the same way, because I am now three hours behind, and 2558 kilometers away from him, but initially, I made the effort, because this boy means a lot to me, and I didn't want to just let go completely. I soon realised, despite my initial resignations, that although we can't see each other, we still communicate just as much as before I left, if not more, and he means even more to me, now that I don't get to see him everyday.
I'm not saying that I took him for granted before I left, but I didn't really think about the distance until a week or so before I left, and by then it was so permanent that I just didn't want to think about leaving anymore. I guess it was a case of pushing it to the back of my mind, and dealing with it when it became a problem. Thankfully, our trans-tasman isn't showing any signs of changing in a hurry.

There are still some things I don't agree with about long-distance though.
Like, people who meet on the internet, but have no interest in moving closer together, or meeting up at any point, but still claim to be "together", from the other side of the world?
Or people who meet once, and then talk lots and get "together"? I don't understand those kinds of 'relationships'. I mean, in order to have a real and meaningful relationship, surely you have to have spent enough time in their company to get to know them and enjoy their company first, right? Surely, in order to consider your long-distance love-interest a 'relationship', you should have actually began the relationship in each other's company, right? If you've never met someone, how can you say you know them better than their work colleagues, or their friends? Surely, being in a 'relationship' generally requires a deeper level of understanding between two parties, a greater awareness of each other, and a more comprehensive knowledge of their personality traits etc, than that of their friends? How would you know that they bite their nails, or suck their thumbs, or grind their teeth? That sort of thing doesn't generally come up in conversation. How would you know about their mannerisms? They way they tilt their head when they're trying to concentrate, or their nasty habit of chewing on pencils, or excessive use of the word "Bro"...These aren't the sorts of things you can learn about someone if you only know them through Bebo / Facebook / MSN / Myspace / Whatever, and it is these things that can really define a person as being someone you want to connect yourself to for ever and ever, amen.

Am I being too harsh on all those poor, lost souls on remote cattle stations in Siberia, who are just looking for love, or do I make a lot more sense than you'd be willing to admit?
