I made a new friend this year. Confident strong, in control. My friend understands me as no one else does. Her black eyes watch over me as she breathes softly in my ear, whispering secrets about myself. She tells me who I am. She tells me who I should be. Silently and without fear, she gently takes my hand and leads me to the places where she knows I should be going.
Together we are like two mountain climbers, scaling the face of a dangerous cliff. My friend is always in the lead, comforting, encouraging, coaxing me to keep on climbing. Though the wall is steep and hard to grab on to, though my body is scratched and bruised and broken, and though I keep falling again and again, I continue to follow and obey her orders, intrigued by her promises and of the beautiful things we will see at the top. Though I cannot see it, I know it is there, somewhere above, a little higher than I am right now. The top is always just out of reach. I know it is there because she told me so.
My friends my family, and even my doctor are jealous of my new friend. They call her a bad influence and try to push her away. But with each push my friend pulls back harder. She clings tight to my fingers, explaining that they do not understand.
People get angry, upset and frustrated, but they don’t understand it isn’t me. Its her. She has all my control. When people call me “different,” she agrees. “You are different. And you can be better” They do not know her as I know her.
She is not my friend but something more. A guide, a councillor, a teacher, a coach. Each morning she wakes me up early and dictates our plans for the day. If I do what she says, then I am rewarded with praises from her.
She is happy too. She takes her pleasure from my body, my heart, my mind. My strength, my energy, my soul.
She takes pleasure from breaking the bonds that connect me to my family and friends. She eats my smile for dessert.
My friend has made me believe she is always right. I don’t know who is wining or losing and who’s side I am on. My friend says we are ahead, but I am not so sure. Everyday I feel myself losing. Losing energy, losing pride, losing hope. I have yet to see the prizes she promised me. I have yet to see the beautiful view from the mountain top.
Yet I keep on struggling. I keep on climbing with her, in the hopes of one day I will reach the top. and my friend will be there waiting, watching me as she always does. I will close my eyes as she spins me around, dancing to the music only we hear. But then I worry and I wonder; “how will I know when we get reach the edge? “just keep your eyes closed,” she tells me. “I will catch you before you fall.” Shes the only one I can trust. She’s part of me.
