Naturally talented and aggressive, Steve won the 600 National Junior Challenge in 1996 and the British Powerbike title in 1998. He finally tasted the winner's champagne in the British Superbike Championship in 2002 at Oulton Park, a result which came amid a strong ending to the season. Plater switched from Yamaha to Honda, taking a further two race victories in 2003, only to return to Yamaha for 2004 for a campaign plagued by injury. A mid-term switch from Ducati to Honda brought a strong ending to 2005, but 2006 again saw him ride for several teams, including Rizla Suzuki. Steve is a rider who built his reputation in British Supersport, finishing as runner-up twice.

Twice winner of the Macau Grand Prix, winner at NorthWest 200 and an accomplished Isle of Man TT performer, Plater is a successful public road racer who also has past experience with World Endurance.
