The Pantheon of Irish Gods...
Im typin one handed and im sorry for any1 that reads this no doubt theres spelling mistakes galore. Its just my rambling thoughts anyway and i cant be arsed using words spellchecker. Bein out of work with this injury is giving me time to think about things. Our native paganism being one of my favourite subjects Ive been thinkin about the the Irish Gods and the lack of a structured Pantheon in Irish Mythology.
Why do Greece and Rome have a well marked out pantheon but we dont. I think its down to the nature of our societies during our pagan era's. Greece and especially Rome had a centralised government while they were pagan but we didnt. In Greece and Rome there was a clearly marked out national power structure so as religion is influenced by politics and must fit the society around it to thrive their Religion and so the power structure of their Gods might have been organised similarly either conciously or just over time their religion evolving with their society.
Ireland on the other hand had no centralised government while we were pagan. We were a tribal culture. Maybe tribal isnt t he right word we werent primatives but an advanced form of tribalism anyway with the country divided into small territories governed by a system of cleintship. Each tribal king kicking up to a greater king above him who has more cattle and warriors until you reach the kings of Provinces. Even the kings of provinces didnt get to make the laws of the lands of kings beneath him. The laws were made by mostly independant Brehon Judges who may have had ties to a territory but were equal in ranking to kings under the law. With that in mind maybe we dont have a pantheon of gods to mirror the Greek and Roman ones because our society was different to theirs and didnt require it.
Taking that as True the gods must have had some organised structure that reflected our system of tribal cleintship. I think its possible that our pantheon is obviously outlined in our mythology but its more personalised. We wouldnt have 1 mammy and Daddy of all Gods cos we didnt have 1 ruling family those gods favoured. We'd have regional mammy and daddy Gods that ruled over provinces with the greatest kings, then mammy and daddy gods Gods of smaller territories with ties to ruling family lines or just lesser kings. Then in keeping with the triplicity in the mythology a 3rd tier with house hold gods not tied to any profession or responsible for any territory.
An example of that 3 tier system might be in cath maigh tuireadh with Dian Cecht, Miach and Airmed. When Nuada is injured he is imperfect has to give up the kingship in favour of the fomorian king Bres (the ascention of another tribe to power in the territory). Dian Cecht who's son Cian is married to a Daughter of a king of the fomorians doesnt heal Nuadu completely, he gives Nuadu a Silver arm.
Miach another of Dian Cechts sons doesnt like it and so heals Nuadu completely. Dian Cecht possibly unhappy his political machinations are ruined cuts out Miachs Brain for overstepping his bounds. Miach is buried and herbs corresponding to every sinue and muscle spring from the grave. Dian Cechts Daughter Airmed collects the herbs in the traditional irish mantle and separates them in the right order. Dian Cecht then comes along and scrambles the order of the herbs.
T1. In that story Dian Cecht is involed with kings and politics placin him on the top tier
T2. Then Miach who as the son of Dian Cecht is lower on the social totem pole then Dian Cecht as all children are to their parents but has equal knowlege is killed for going against DC without reprocussion. Miach is possibly the patron god of a hereditary family of healers either way he is below Dian Cecht Putting him on the second tier.
T3. Airmed who again as a child of Dian Cecht is lower on the Totem pole then him shows she doesnt have the same level of knowlege as Dian Cecht and Miach because Dian Cecht can scramble the order of the Herbs collected denying Airme0 comentarios 1095 días
