Sometimes, I think we have stopped evolving as a human race. If you need evidence, simply read the instructions on the back of almost anything you buy. I purchased a packet of peanuts the other day, and just reading the packaging made me despair for humanity.
First it was the big bold letters that read: warning, may contain traces of nuts” -well duh-but it was the second line that really pushed me over the edge. It simply read, “instructions: open packet and eat nuts” whew, lucky they put that there, I was going to stick them up my butt and then ask someone to pull my finger so I could do my impersonation of a poker machine paying out.
But it’s not just nuts that have gone nuts.
I bought a glass biscuit jar the other day and it came with instructions. Take a moment to think about that. Instructions? Sorry but if you a need instructions to open a jar, I don’t think you can be trusted with glass.
Are there really people who look at jars with lids on and think “but how do I get the bickies in there? It must be some kind of combination or magic trick. Damn I wish this thing came with instructions.”
Maybe the jar-ily challenged are the same people who buy my deodorant, which, incidentally, also has a warning on the back. In big letters it says: “do not spray in eyes!”
Ok, heres my first question: who has sweaty eyes? Second, what kind of moron gets up in the morning and says, “gee my eyes stink…ow ow ow, there should be a warning with this!”
I don’t mean to sound harsh, but if you need that warning, you are too stupid to read it. (Especially if you’ve previously sprayed deodorant in your eyes.)
You think that warning is stupid? I bought some sleeping pills for an overseas flight once, and on the packet it said: “warning may cause drowsiness”! Really? In that case id better have a couple of cups of coffee and some red bull to take the edge off.
That’s like having a packet of aspirin that says: “warning, may relieve symptoms of a headache.” Or a packet of Viagra that says, “Warning may cause grandpa to chase grandma around the kitchen table”
Idiocy is all around us-you just have to open your lynx scented eyes. I’ll give you another example. I was waiting for the bus the other day and I noticed a little sign on the driver’s window that said: “do not access bus through window”! I mean, who’s that sign for? Keanu Reeves? People who were born by caesarean and so have never gone through doors, only through windows?
Do they have one on the roof that says, “Do not access bus by skydiving”?
Ladies and gentlemen, the simple truth is that there are a lot of simple people in the world. And if you need any further proof check this out: I read once that in the past 10 years 31 aussies have died from watering the Christmas tree while the lights were still plugged in. what was worse was that a few of those were watering plastic trees.
Now I don’t want to seem callous, but to me, that’s not really a tragedy, that’s natural selection. You see, from what I can vaguely recall from science lessons at school, there was this bloke called Charles Darwin who came up with the theory of evolution. (And to reward him they named the least evolved city in Australia in his honour).
In basic terms it was a matter of survival of the fittest. In every generation, the strongest and most intelligent would survive and they would breed together and we would evolve. Well no more. We have stopped evolving as a human race. Don’t believe me? We live in a world where George W Bush is the leader of the free world. This is a man Forrest Gump would have teased in school. He’s also a man who once said, “The question is rarely asked, is our children learning?”
Most presidents’ travel on air force one, not Dubya, he has to travel on a special bus where they let him lick the windows.
