November 5th, 1969. I was born at the tail end of the 1960s, as Armstrong landed on the moon, plastic, formica and terrylene reshaped the product markets and legislation was passed allowing dads at the birth of their children.

In light of this new social revolution, my dad, brimming with excitement at the prospect of finally watching one of his sprogs pop into the world, went up to the local Maternity Unit with my mum.
As he tried to join my mother in the delivery room he was sent back with a flea in his ear to the waiting room. A burly matron informed him that rules had not yet changed in this Maternity Unit. Legislation had not impacted in Sleaford at this point in time and rules were rules. Lincolnshire rules. In fact change of any kind, took a long time to reach Sleaford and was to be a recurring theme in my childhood.

Tales of the riverbank

The river Slea, where my brother at 3 nearly drowned, dragged under the the river weed – falling in reaching for his fishing net that had slipped from his fingers. Jars of sticklebacks still sat on the path as kids scattered to find an adult to pull him from the muddy bed.
My brother got over his fear of water eventually but hardly any thanks to my dad who threw him in the deep end at the swimming pool to purge his phobia. Not this time but later on, he did get over his fear of water but I’m not sure he got over his fear of my dad.

We’d dig in the banks of this river for Roman coins. Sleaford has been home to many ancient settlements, including the Romans and many a road around Lincolnshire was built by those latin fellas in big helmets and pleated short skirts.

We lived just across from the riverbank … a cattle field separating us from what is really a man-made canal (the real River Slea now just a trickle of a stream running alongside the field). There was an old rotten log where the local kids sat and played. That’s where I followed my big brother and sister, where I first fell in a big bunch of nettles and where I first learned at the hands of my sister what dock leaves did. Funny how she became a nurse…
