Remember when the news came on when you where a kid? And they kept saying things like 'inflation' 'morgate costs?' bills in parliment? and you'd switch off....you'd think, aaawwwww.....where's 'fresh prince'? Ya know, you did't care. Men in suits. People talking. Ssshhhhhh!....Daddys watching the news.' Growing up in the 80's, i thought the news just gave adults an excuse other than sport to blindly sware at the t.v., because thats all that happened when it was on, so it must've been important. The sport certainly was.
Anyway, now iam adult. Now I do the samething when the news is on. not sport, fuck sport. Its entertment. A distriction. But the news. I saw someone murdered today on the news. I can't remember every seeing anything like that before. you? certainly i remember '..and we must warn viewers that they find some scenes distrubing.' but it never was. cross usually, specially with the famine peices. I mean, they broadcast the gulf war, but it looked like a michael bay movie, only with shitter cameras. police forces storming a building?but literally, thats it. we see them go in, get told whats happening. School shootings? same thing.kids crying, a blooied arm cast from underneath a blanket. Natal distasters where just ruble and swarms of fantic and bewildered people,blurred by a pumped up and freaking out camera man. then there was 9/11, and a generation of children would never look at the news the same way again.
We finally had a moment. like the moonwalking, jfk,england winning the world cup. we just missed out on the berlin wall. young enough to remember, but it meant our parents wanted the t.v and we couldn't play our super nintendo for a while. 9/11 was our generations conection with whats happeing in the world through our tv screens. the bigger picture blown up into glourious hi-def. And the news hasn't been the same since. in the 80's, it hadn't become the orwellian extestion to the state, but it was well on its way. Now though, what with our own 'purpual war with an unseen enemy that never ends' anyone with half a thinking mind would at least concide he was right. I could not believe what i heard today on the same broadcast as that guy getting shot....(oh, he deserved it by the way. set of a bomb in a street in bagdad, set upon by the growd,shot, killed. democracy in action. its just the fact the broadcast it. how often do they report, 'bomb in some-muslam-place-you-dont-give-a-fuck-about,massive amounts dead' we ever see the acompying footage?fuck no, specially not the 6'o clock news! children are eating their dinner! if they not, ya know, out getting high or pregnet just to get on the houseing list, but hey!thats a whole nuther topic. i mean...its not like they dont get the shocking hardcore pictures, the edidoral discsion is taken not to show them....so, why now?)....anyway, in relation to the whole 48 days holding issue, i heard a representive of the green party utter these very words before i choked in sheer beguilment....i stopped lstening after i heard just this because no sane, rational person would say this, surely? "Well, i agree with his stance on the erosion of civil liberities.....' and then peice after peice of news items i grew up watching, sliently wishing i could't care,just like back then. inflation. econic down turn. fuel shortage. its the 80's all over again and the same fucking music's selling just as well now as it did then and the same fuckin rulin power's bout to come watlzing in from stage right. sorry, stage centeralist right. I think As a generation, its a pretty fair assuption that ....well, we're fucked. On the point of Civil liberties, the 48 day law, which gives the state to power to hold a terroist suspect, a suspect mind you, for that lenght of time, just if, ya know, they feellike it and its the law, so mind your your tounge you,you young upstart you, passed Today, literally two, maybe three days after the smokeing ban first came into effect.
