About Me

Me, Myself, and I
I love God - He's big, great, fab, strong and He's my mate!
I love Jo, my wife for over 12 years (she deserves a medal). We have two cats (Sophie & Simba) and two fish (Zig & Zag). The cats ignore the fish most of the time, preferring birds and especially mice.
I love working for the Baptist Union of Scotland for the last 9 of them. I'm based in Glasgow, but travel the country - racked up quite a few miles this summer visiting Step Out mission teams.
I love living in Moodiesburn, just outside Glasgow. We have a fantastic view of the Campsies out our back garden. Sometimes think we run a B&B with the ammount of people we have staying - 18 over the summer alone.

  • Insular Worship!!!???!!!

I was at a "concert" the other night in Glasgow. It was by a well known singer/songwriter and the room was packed and folk were singingtheir hearts out and bouncing. The atmosphere was terrific and the band were awesome.

    BUT

(and you could tel there was a 'BUT)

What concernd me was that the majority of the praise songs were of a very personal nature - using of personal pronouns (I, me, my, etc). I have sensed that this is a growing tend (so perhaps I am looking out for this a little too much), and I'm not ure what to think about it.

I have no problem with personal praise songs, and they are great for personal devotional times. But in corporate worship I'm a litle less comfortable about the majority of the worship being personal. As we gather together as Christians, it's not about us meeting individually with God (like we are some kind of battery chicken in a coop), but joining ogether to give God theglory, honour and praise. Our choice of praise should refect that togetherness, not encourage individualism. faith may be personal, but there is also a 'family' side to it.

Here endeth the rant (for just now!)

  • Bad Day?!?

I was speaking at a youth service in Mosspark BC last night and used the Daniel Powter song, 'Bad Day' as the launchpad for the service.
Daniel wrote the song as he went through tw years of rehab after years of drug addiction. It's a great song that reminds us about perspective - when going through bad situations, how we look at them can make a huge difference (and the video that goes along with that subltly re-inforces that message).
Paul reminds us of that in 2 Corinthians 4:7-15. No matter how crappy a day, there is always hope if we remember that we need to experience something of the crucifixion if we are going the enjoy the resurrection, we can face the bad times with God who does not desert us and it's all character building for the future situations we will face and need strength to come through.
It may b a bad day, but it's not without hope!

  • The Force?

I was watching Star Wars Episode 5 (The Empire Strikes Back) - or Star Wars 2 for my generation last night. Jo was out so I could watch what I wanted.

There's a scene in the film where Luke Skywalker is learning how to become a Jedi in the forest. Yoda is tutoring him in the art and helping him to feel the Force inside him. Luke is struggling, especially when Yoda asks him to lift his spcaship out of the bog. Luke says that he can move the rocks, but not the ship. It's too heavy.

I was reminded about the fact that as Christians, we don't have 'the force' inside us, but the Creator of the universe, the Almighty God. All we need is to place our faith in Him, not oursleves and our own abilities, and we will succeed.

There's a song that the Step Out + team was using this summer - 'Faith as small as a mustard can move mountains, move mountains'. That's what we need - faith of any size, if it's in God, can do amazing things.

hey hey, how are things? I was wondering if I could possibly get a copy of that quiz you used at Deep Impact? I'm off to Lendrick Muir this weekend and it would be a real help if you still have it as it will save me having to produce one which is practically the same!
