"If you've lost your faith in love and music, the end won't be long"

The Libertines; they're funny, contrary, argumentative and a little bit insane. Their world is an old school compendium of Union Jacks, brittle English vocals and mod stylings. Musically, they're part of a 'quintessentially British' lineage of eccentric, arty and articulate bands stretching back to The Kinks and taking in The Jam, The Smiths and Blur en route. Their songs are short, sharp and chaotic, and live they have a tendency towards the haywire.

Peter and Carl first met around 1996 in east London and the two idealists bonded over music and a mutual romanticism. They had a shared interest in playing guitar and ended up writing music together, resolving to form a band with a name that reflected their attitude: a libertine is someone who is unrestrained by convention or morality. They decided they wanted to sail "the good ship Albion to Arcadia". Where is Arcadia you may ask? Well, the band all have their interpretations - it's Pete's vision of a better place, where everything is cool. John suggests "It's where cigarettes grow on trees and all benches are made of denim", whilst Carl explains Arcadia is about the realm of the infinite, which is just in the mind and is capable of anything as radical or as beautiful or as sick as you can conjure up.
